Their characters were very well built and Ridley Scott might have not wanted to ruin that impression by an intimate scene between the two just to pursue their bromance, on-screen.
Ben Affleck shared,
“In the original actual version of that scene — the way that ceremony actually took place was that you kissed everyone on the mouth and we had that in the script. It was not a sort of outrageous or strange custom and that would have been our first on-screen kiss. Ridley thought it would be distracting, and his instincts are pretty good.”
The Last Duel was a critical success, but a commercial failure. Critics gave the movie favorable reviews, with many applauding the acting, directing, and script.
