There are a few specific tricks that many filmmakers love to incorporate into movies almost whenever they can, and sometimes those special moments work really well and end up being some of the most memorable ones in movie history, but other times those frequently employed tricks of the trade end up completely falling flat. A celebrity cameo is another one of those filming techniques that can be exceedingly hit or miss.
Movie cameos have been an integral part of filmmaking since they help bring a special essence to the films. While it’s not unusual that audiences tend to miss these moments, Tom Cruise’s unexpected cameo in Steven Spielberg’s directed biopic is definitely you might have missed out on.
Tom Cruise’s cameo in Austin Powers in Goldmember
Austin Powers in Goldmember starts off with all of our favorite franchise characters acting out their typical scenes. That is, until we discover that every single one of them has been unexpectedly replaced by a more well-known actor. In the funny parody of a parody, Danny DeVito, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Kevin Spacey all took part. No performer, though, was as well-known as Tom Cruise, who effectively “stole” the part of Austin Powers.
Tom Cruise plays Austin Powers in Goldmember while donning a wig, spectacles, and artificial teeth. His cameo appears in a gorgeously self-referential spoof sequence titled Austinpu**y, where Steven Spielberg is shown producing a film about Austin Powers’ adventures. Although the film reassures one that Mike Meyers is the only actor who can accurately portray Austin Powers’ characteristics, Cruise makes a brief appearance when he parodies Powers in the movie-within-the-movie.
Why did movie legend Tom Cruise agree to do the cameo?
Mr. Cruise let go of his more typical action character appearance and let loose in his brief role as Austin Powers. The actor went completely haywire in the parody scene, which for him meant donning some completely absurd attire. But why did the renowned, extraordinarily gifted artist agree to do it?
While the Top Gun actor hasn’t made much of a statement about his decision to play the part, other Austin Powers cast members have been a little more open about their personal experiences filming their cameos. Actress Katie Couric, for instance, revealed earlier how she decided to do the cameo in a spoofy scene because of the belief that Spielberg’s movie was going to be a massive success, which made the offer seem quite flattering.
It is impossible to determine if Tom Cruise was as excited to be a part of the film as Couric was.
