Henry Cavill is one of the biggest stars of the Hollywood industry, who has played numerous prominent roles in high-grossing films. The actor is loved by one and all for his portrayal of the character of DC star Superman. He played the role for the first time in Zack Snyder’s directorial Man of Steel. He reprised the role in several other DCEU projects and has earned lots of love from his fans for being the caped superhero.
However, the story could have been quite different if he was picked to play another superhero, Green Lantern.
Henry Cavill could have replaced Ryan Reynolds in Green Lantern
Henry Cavill was destined to play a popular superhero from the comic-book universe. He won the hearts of his fans with the character of cape crusader Superman. However, prior to his role in 2013, he could have donned the costume of Green Lantern. The movie was the first film based on the superhero, and the story covered the details of his origin as a test pilot who becomes part of the intergalactic protection force.
Several top-tier actors were considered for the lead protagonist including Henry Cavill. The character of Hal Jordan was finally played by Deadpool star, Ryan Reynolds. Despite a fantastic cast, the film bombed at the box office.
Ryan Reynolds on playing the lead in Green Lantern
Ryan Reynolds‘ film Green Lantern was one of the biggest box-office failures, grossing $220 million against a production budget of $200 million.
Talking about the failure of the superhero film he said,
“There were just too many people spending too much money and when there was a problem rather than say, ‘OK, let’s stop spending on special effects and let’s think about character’.”
“That just never… the thinking was never there to do that,” he said, adding. “And to their credit, it’s a very old school way of looking at things. It’s just ‘Let’s just keep spending our way through this.’
“At the same time, there are 185 people that worked on that movie – they all had an amazing time, and we loved shooting it. Truly, shooting the movie was a lot of fun. But, you know, sitting in that premiere, watching that… oh my God, it’s tough.”
Talking about his reaction to seeing the film for the first time, Reynolds said,
“The words were ‘holy s***’ and ‘no, no!’
“It was crazy. It was an odd feeling. It was not a feeling I wanted to repeat. So I really spent the following years just owning as much as I could, it was the only way to kind of process it.”
Green Lantern cast included Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard, Mark Strong, Angela Bassett, and Tim Robbins. It was directed by Martin Campbell and released in 2011.
