What are the reasons behind the delay?

Developer Larian has released a statement describing why there is a delay on the release of Baldur’s Gate 3 on Xbox, and it is because of issues between the Xbox Series X and the Xbox Series S. Due to a Microsoft policy, game developers are expected to release games on both consoles with the exact same features accessible to both consoles, but unfortunately, this has created numerous hurdles for developer Larian, especially in regards to their cough CO-OP, which will feature in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Throughout development, game designers have many issues they need to address so that they can release games out into the public, this can be a struggle all on its own, but in regards to Xbox, there are a few extra hurdles to jump over, such as this policy. The reasoning behind this is because the Xbox Series X is designed to be a more powerful version of the console, meaning that it can run faster with better graphics, faster loading screens, faster frame rates and a higher resolution, but the Xbox series S is designed to be a less powerful version of the console which in-turn reduces or removes these features which can also cause trouble for developers.

Due to these limitations, Larian have had to try and develop couch CO-OP for both consoles and has unfortunately run into a few issues with the Xbox series S which has led Larian with very few options. So far, the only options that Larian can consider are to delay Baldur’s Gate 3 until it can fix this issue, to remove this feature for both consoles or to find a workaround.

For now, Larian has decided to delay the release on Xbox, but due to the Microsoft policy, they are restricted to either delaying it till it can be fixed or removing it from both versions of the game, which isn’t going to end well for Larian.

What else have the developers said in regard to this delay?

So far, there hasn’t been a lot mentioned about this delay, but the developers at Larian have talked about this delay and how it isn’t what they planned.

It’s not that we planned this. Our plan was that we wanted to have a simultaneous release. But we’ve been on this game for a long time. It’s a really big game. The amount of things you can do in it is insane. I think people will be surprised when they see everything.

Whilst also explaining why it was a lot easier for them to develop Baldur’s Gate 3 for other platforms by saying, “You can do all kinds of craziness, so it requires a lot of optimisation. On certain platforms we’re just faster than on other platforms. It just takes us time. That’s the reality of development.” which hopefully with put a few gamers’ minds at ease whilst Larian works on this issue.
