Lea Thompson, best known for the Back to the Future franchise has created a legacy in her decades-spanning iconic career. The actor also gained fame decades later for her role in Willard Huyck’s 1985 Marvel movie Howard the Duck.
Despite the immense popularity of the movie, Thompson had some pretty bad memories from the film as the actor later revealed that she regretted doing the film. Thompson played Beverly Switzler, a resident of Cleveland where Howard the Duck landed after being beamed down from Duckworld.
Lea Thompson Regretted Doing Howard the Duck
Lea Thompson was particularly happy with her Howard the Duck role. Also, the intimate scenes with the Duck were also pretty awkward. Despite being in the lead as the singer Beverly, the role was painful for the actor. However, her character went on to become a cult icon of her own. Thomson once said that it was “devastating” and in the course of a year the actor was “in the biggest hit and the biggest bomb so that probably destroyed my film career,” Thompson said.
“People love Howard the Duck and those are some of my favorite fans. Because anybody that goes: ‘I don’t care what anybody says, I think it’s really cool’ is my kind of person.”
She might hate being in the movie but the actor never disowned the love she got from the audience for the movie that went on to achieve the cult status. “It’s a hilariously bizarre movie,” Thompson once told Yahoo Movies. In a shout-out to fans at L.A. Film Festival, the actor said, “I love that it’s had a resurgence, and I love all the fans.” “Because they’re iconoclasts. They don’t like to be told what to like and what to hate,” she added. Also, the actor claimed that she is a Marvel queen with crimped hair and a guitar, crowned even before the beginning of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Lea Thompson Wants to Direct a Howard The Duck Movie
Howard The Duck has been one of the worst-viewed movies and a box office bomb but later the movie got cult status and gained immense popularity. The character, Howard The Duck recently came back to live with cameos in Guardians of the Galaxy, and Avengers: Endgame and he appeared in two episodes of What If…? Reportedly, Thompson has been keen on making another Howard The Duck movie, the actor even pitched ideas to MCU alongside writer Chip Zdarsky. But this time, she wanted to direct the movie.
“Well see, I wanted, I’ve been in to pitch a Howard the Duck movie, with Chip Zdarsky, who did the comic book, the last run of the Howard the Duck comic book, he put me on the cover. And so we went in and we pitched it… I’ve been directing a lot of sci-fi shows, big shows, to learn how to do the special effects, and all that. […] But yeah, I’ve been trying to learn all my special effects, just in case Marvel calls. You need some more women directors!” Thompson told Jimmy Fallon on a The Tonight Show appearance.
However, Thompson’s desire to direct the MCU movie is not happening anytime soon as the studio passed on the project. But her insistence on more woman directors certainly requires attention as only a few movies were made by women directors in the studio.
