Avowed: Stop Gap or Skyrim Successor?

Currently, very little is known about the Avowed storyline. What we do know is that it is set in the same fantasy world of Eora, the setting for Obsidian’s other success; Pillars of Eternity. And despite rumours, we have no confirmation whether this will be a prequel or where it will be in the Eora timeline.

Players will be transported to the Living Lands, a remote island where they will encounter mystical beasts and strange plant life, as part of the Aedyran Empire. Like Pillars of Eternity, players will be able to create their own character, however this is limited to the only two primary races of Aedyr, which are Human and Elf. But maybe the most exciting part of the game is what was shown in the reveal trailer of the player firing mystical dual-wield flintlock pistols. So magic guns are a thing…

Avowed – Game Play is an Adventure

Avowed

Although it was initially touted that the game would be open world, it has since been confirmed by Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart that the game play of Avowed will be more like of that Obsidian’s hugely successful Knights of The Old Republic II and this would emphasize Obsidian’s strength. Urquhart was quoted with the following;

“We could go off and create an 8km x 8km open world and then deal with all the consequences of that – because that makes it a different style game. But we want to tell more confined stories that the player can experience with their companions and then move from part of the world to part of the world”.

It should be worth touching on what Urquhart mentions in that statement, as Obsidian have confirmed that there will be certain emphasis on companions throughout the game and the feeling is that if you’re going out on an adventure, then you should have a crew to accompany you on this. Whether this will be your very own Fellowship level crew, remains to be seen.

Avowed – Is the Criticism Un-necessary?

Avowed

But let’s just stop there and address the elephant in the room… There have been rumbles of discontent from video game enthusiasts who are less than impressed with Avowed’ s graphics and certain fans have criticised the scope of the game. Given that we’re not looking at a release date until 2024, there’s plenty of time for these fears and criticisms to be answered and allayed. Certainly, one of the developers for Obsidian going by the name of Briar Diem has come out to reassure fans that graphics would certainly be addressed over the course of development and that the game hadn’t yet progressed into Alpha.

Comparisons are going to be drawn with Skyrim and rightly so but given that we aren’t expecting Elder Scrolls 6 for a while, Avowed has the opportunity to fill that gap for fans of fantasy games who are crying out for a fresh RPG. And knowing the pedigree of this company and their track record for amazing games,(check out their other amazing titles here), Obsidian may just have another jewel in the crown with Avowed

Although 2024 may seem far away, this game is giving us an exciting new game to look forward to.
