It was a heartbreaking scene to have Agent Phil Coulson die back in 2012 at the hands of the God of Mischief, Loki. By then he had only appeared a handful of times, making his debut in the Iron Man franchise. Unknown to many, Coulson was soon resurrected and resumed his work for S.H.I.E.L.D. And then in season 5 of Agents of S.H.I.E.LD., Coulson finally passed away peacefully.

Phil Coulson, played by Clark Gregg, has since remained a favorite of many. An interesting character, his dry sense of humor and fun yet no-nonsense personality are what make him likable. His determination towards the organization and the internal conflicts and his back story as revealed in the show makes him a character that is hard to let go of.

In an interview, Clark Gregg was asked whether there is any chance of him returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe once again as Phil Coulson. While he didn’t give any confirmation, his reply did seem hopeful that Coulson might be back once again.

“There’s just always a chance that- I mean, you know, it’s a multiverse.”

And we can’t help but keep our fingers crossed to have him back in the Avengers franchise.

Marvel’s newest series The Secret Invasion features Nick Fury and the rest of the Agents battling an evil invasion of the creatures called Skrulls. Skrulls first appeared in the movie Captain Marvel, where one Skrull even impersonated Agent Coulson. These series of events have had fans speculating whether Phil Coulson is a Skrull himself. In response to this question, Clark Gregg joked that he has been a Skrull all along.

He further added,

“No, I think he was a real life person. I can barely keep track of all the things he became, or that he might show up as some other time. But I think he was, what made him, I don’t know what, stand out or connect with the fans was the fact that he was very, very human.”

While there has been no news of Phil Coulson returning, it would be fun to see Clark Gregg reprise his beloved role once again.
