For a while now AI designed work has been becoming more and more involved throughout different formats and will continue to grow over the coming years, but is this a good sign or a bad one? So far, there has been a lot of controversy in regard to AI projects as it has caused a lot of people to believe that it isn’t a traditional art form and steals work from hard-working employees, which has led Kickstarter to create a new AI-centric rule that they have put in place.

What is this new rule, and will it impact Kickstarters?
Due to the fact that AI has been becoming a lot more popular in development in things like films and gaming, and other pieces of artwork, and due to this Kickstarter has created a new rule that if any project is put onto Kickstarter, then whoever is placing the project on their website they will need to disclose any assets that utilise AI to create the assets and the creator will also have to disclose how they will use AI content in their work and reveal how much of the project has used AI-based assets and what was created by humans.
Now that this new AI-centric rule has come into place, a lot of Kickstarters are at risk of these new rules, but what will happen if they are found to be breaking these new rules or trying to find a loophole? If anyone is found to be breaking these rules, there will be severe consequences as their Kickstarter will be declined, and they will be banned from placing any more Kickstarters onto the website, which can ruin a person’s career in certain circumstances.

Will any other websites take this approach?
As AI is slowly joining the gaming industry, it has put a lot of strain on websites that help to sell gaming, such as Steam which has recently had some trouble with a project that has recently been banned due to using AI-based artwork. This happened because the project was submitted but still had some early AI assets in the final product that weren’t acknowledged when it was sent in for approval from Valve, which caused them to ban the project even though they do not disagree with AI artwork they want to make sure that if it is used in a project that it is credited and that it doesn’t break any copyright laws.
For now, there will be a lot of worry in regard to AI projects as it will be a more commonplace asset that will be used in gaming, but if it is used correctly and disclosed, there won’t be any issues. At the moment, there are no plans to ban AI-based work on Kickstarter and Steam as they believe it is part of the future development of content, but if it gets out of hand, there is a risk that they may have to take drastic measures to ensure that it doesn’t get out of hand.
