How Arnold Schwarzenegger And Harrison Ford Saved His Career
Visualizing someone other than Bruce Willis in his Die Hard role is a challenge. Interestingly, the movie acts as a sequel to Schwarzenegger’s Commando, and the role initially made its way to Bruce Willis after being declined by Schwarzenegger, Harrison Ford, and Richard Gere.
Thanks to Schwarzenegger’s immense ’80s stardom, his name was on every casting radar. However, the seven-time Mr. Olympia champion had a desire to veer away from action temporarily, opting to explore comedy through the film Twins.
In Die Hard, Bruce Willis delivers an iconic performance, embodying the resourceful and witty NYPD officer John McClane that reshaped the action genre. Willis skillfully intertwines vulnerability and determination, rendering McClane an accessible hero for the audience.
With charisma, clever quips, and vigorous physicality, Willis enriched the character, raising the bar for action leads. His depiction of McClane’s emotional evolution, evolving from an outnumbered underdog to a victorious and resolute hero, firmly etched his name in cinematic lore, elevating Die Hard to a timeless classic.
Die Hard 3 Almost Became Lethal Weapon 4
Initially conceived as the fourth installment in the Lethal Weapon series, Die Hard With a Vengeance, the third chapter in the Die Hard series, embarked on a different trajectory. Jonathan Hensleigh, renowned for works like Jumanji and Armageddon, penned a script named ‘Simon Says,’ which was initially envisioned as a venture starring Brandon Lee.
Even in those early stages, Hensleigh’s script bore a remarkable resemblance to the eventual Die Hard With A Vengeance. Titled Simon Says, the screenplay centered around an improbable partnership combating city-wide bomb threats. However, the tragic demise of Brandon Lee during the making of The Crow in 1993 led to Warner Bros. acquiring the script and adapting it into the Lethal Weapon series with modern elements.
As Mel Gibson’s enthusiasm waned for a swift return to the Lethal Weapon series, Warner Bros. opted to relinquish the script to Fox. In Fox’s domain, the screenplay captured Bruce Willis’s interest, leading to its approval. Subsequently, Hensleigh was enlisted to reshape the script into the third installment of Die Hard. This version saw the inclusion of Samuel L. Jackson as Bruce Willis’s character McClane’s partner, cementing the partnership dynamic.
Die Hard is available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
