MCU’s Guardians team is a far more interconnected group than one would realize. Rocket and Groot were best friends, but now Groot is like Rocket’s adopted son. Peter Quill loves Gamora, and Gamora and Nebula were sisters. Yondu was Quill’s adopted daddy! Mantis and Drax were the outsiders, but now they’re best friends. We initially presumed that Mantis is Quill’s half-sister, as Quill’s real father Ego mated with his Terran mother, along with someone from the same species as Mantis. This was initially denied by James Gunn, but now it has been confirmed by Marvel Legends’ Mantis episode on Disney+.
While Ego killed all his offspring that didn’t carry the Celestial light, he allowed Mantis to live as she helped him sleep. He didn’t raise her as his child, but as more of a pet/slave. But that doesn’t mean she isn’t Quill’s half-sibling. So, it’s nice to have yet another connection within the Guardians’ family. But after this revelation, many fans are convinced that Marvel is going to kill her off in Vol. 3 to raise the emotional stakes of the movie.

Fan Reactions to the Quill-Mantis Revelations
Here, check out how Marvel fans have reacted to the latest revelation:
It always made sense.
How it happened:
It will impact Vol. 3.
Didn’t James Gunn deny this?
Well, James Gunn has claimed that this connection was untrue. But he had also cast doubts on Adam Warlock’s appearance in Vol. 3. And then a few years later, he brought Warlock into the mix anyway. So, maybe everyone who thought about Mantis and Quill’s connection back in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was right after all. Mantis has already got a bigger role in Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. But does this revelation mean that she’d end up dying in Vol. 3? You can’t be sure of that because her chances of dying are far less than Rocket’s!
Who Dies in Guardians Vol. 3?
Everyone in the group has either died or disintegrated at least once except Rocket Raccoon. Groot died in Vol. 1, then his son got dusted in Avengers: Infinity War alongside Drax, Mantis, and Peter Quill. Thanos killed Gamora, but a time-variant of hers was brought into Endgame. Nebula killed her own time variant. So, the only one who hasn’t tasted death is Rocket Raccoon. Also Read: “He was fully aware of my commitments”: James Gunn Silences Aggressive DC Fans for Criticizing Him Promoting Guardians of the Galaxy, Claims David Zaslav Was Aware of His Loyalty
James Gunn has promised that this movie would be all about Rocket since his creator, the High Evolutionary is coming into the picture. So, it’s highly likely that because Gunn relates with Rocket so much, he could be the one who sacrifices himself Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 just like Groot, Yondu, Tony Stark, and Natasha Romanoff did in the past. But let’s just hope that Gunn subverts our expectations and saves him somehow.
Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special begins streaming on Disney+ on November 25. Then Vol. 3 will arrive on May 5, 2023.
