Everybody loves Grant Gustin for playing one of the most positive heroes from the DC television universe, namely: Barry Allen aka the Flash. But while he is thoroughly cheerful on-screen, his off-screen life hasn’t been one without mental health issues.

Appearing on the Inside of You podcast, The Crisis of Infinite Earths star explained how he used to have “weird, anxious-type [of] dreams” even as a child. Not only this but when he went to couple’s therapy with his wife Andrea Thoma before tying the knot with her in 2018, he experienced personal issues then as well.

“I knew I had always dealt with anxiety, but getting pinpointed ideas about where things started and why you were feeling that way,” Grant said. “Anxiety is ever-present in my life, for sure.”

However, even after all this, the 33-year-old actor has finally managed to figure out the roots of his mental health struggles and is now trying his best to cope with them in a healthy way.

After much introspection, Grant Gustin finally came to the realization that many of his anxiety and depression-related problems had stemmed from his inappropriate way of pressuring himself to be perfect. Sharing on the Inside of You podcast, he disclosed how he has lately been trying to fix the problem in a healthy way.

“I’ve come a long way with taking a little pressure off myself. I’ve always been really hard on myself and I still am, but I put way too much pressure on myself early on and got in my way a lot,” Gustin said. “It gets in your way for sure.”

Furthermore, the fact that his contract to play Barry Allen was only till season 7 of The Flash also played a considerable part in affecting his anxiety levels. However, that issue was resolved as well, and Grant Gustin continued to portray the character until the end, with the series finally getting off the air after its ninth and final season earlier this year in May 2023.

Now that he has it all figured out, the Arrow star is trying his best to accept and appreciate himself for the way he is and not be too hard on himself.
