Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, the third installment of the Ant-Man series, has finally hit the big screens in 2023. The film is directed by Peyton Reed and written by Jeff Loveness. It follows the adventures of Ant-Man and the Wasp as they navigate the complexities of the quantum realm and battle new villains. Ant-Man 3 kicked off phase 5 of MCU, introducing the leading antagonist of the story, named Kang the Conqueror, played by Jonathan Majors. The story also explored characters like Hank Pym. Now as per Loveness, the makers were thinking of killing Hank Pym in the film.
Who Is Hank Pym?
Hank Pym is a complex character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He’s a brilliant scientist who created the Pym Particle, a technology that allows the user to shrink down to the size of an ant. Hank Pym is a beloved character in the MCU, largely due to the performances of Michael Douglas, who plays an older version of Pym in the films. Douglas brings a gravitas to the role, conveying both Pym’s brilliance and his vulnerabilities. In Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania the audience comes to know Pym’s character even better.
Jeff Loveness On Killing Hank Pym In Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania
Jeff Loveness revealed the makers were thinking of killing off Hank Pym in the movie. However, he had a unique twist planned for his death. Pym’s consciousness would have been revived, and he would have become a hive mind of the ants, controlling them with his mind. But this concept didn’t make it too far in the production process.
“We were going to kill Hank at one point, and I was going to have him be, like, reanimated. His consciousness was going to live on through the ants, and he was going to be like mentally controlling them. Yeah, he was going to be almost like this hive mind of the ants, and I like that… that didn’t go too far.”
Loveness’s creative mind didn’t end there as he added that he was thinking of introducing a man-sized ant in the film, stating that he wanted Werner Herzog to voice this gigantic ant and share some out-of-the-world advice in the psychological scene of the movie.
“There was a psychological sequence in that probability storm or that quantum nexus, there was more of a dream sequence element to it. I had like a big, like the man-sized ant that was going to be almost like a ninja turtle, the way they looked in that 90s movie, not CGI, make it almost like a Cronenberg ‘The Fly’-like Ant. And it was like in his head. I wanted it to be voiced by Werner Herzog and give it some sort of Holy Mountain kind of advice, some Vision Quest thing. That didn’t get in.”
It is certain that the fans won’t encounter either the undead consciousness of Hank Pym or a man-size ant at any point in the movie. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania was released in theatres on February 17, 2023. The movie will soon be available on Disney + on April 18, 2023.
