The Marvel Cinematic Universe is known for its more than two-hour movie runtime, indulging fans with stunning cinematography, long fighting sequences, and witty dialogues that serve as ice-breakers during intense scenes. While fans love Marvel Studios for that, there have been new changes in the rules that might dismay audiences.
It is true that after the epic Phase Three saga, viewers have experienced superhero fatigue, and made worse after the studio continuously bombarded fans with new projects during the height of the pandemic. Now, as the release of The Marvels film is fast approaching, reports of its total runtime have circulated the Internet.
The Marvels Runtime Revealed Amid Disney CEO’s Cost-Cutting Proposal
According to a post by Cryptic HD Quality, the same user who predicted the runtime of Disney’s The Mandalorian Season 3 and Ahsoka, the upcoming The Marvels film will run for one hour and 33 minutes:
“Since we’re posting approximates, I’ll post mines. The Marvels is currently 1 hour 38 minutes. Credits at 1 hour 33 minutes. This isn’t final.”
Another industry insider known as CanWeGetSomeToast also mentioned that the movie would be “all killer, no filler,” which somehow agrees with the first scooper’s prediction. Fans should bear in mind that this is not official and may still be adjusted since we still have a few more weeks to go before its premiere.
The Marvels will serve as the sequel to different MCU film franchises such as Captain Marvel, WandaVision, and Ms. Marvel. The heroines Carol Danvers, Monica Rambeau, and Kamala Khan will team up to defeat the intergalactic evil forces.
The short runtime, as compared to previous MCU films, may be attributed to the recent controversy tackling the studios’ cut down of expenses. Disney CEO Bob Iger notably said in his interview with CNBC:
“You pull back not just to focus, but also as part of our cost containment initiative. Spending less on what we make, and making less.”
This decision came as a result of the movies’ underwhelming performances at the box office in the previous year. Iger also noted that the company needs to assess the number of sequels for each MCU character, which could also probably affect the film’s duration and other aspects that might concern the budget.
The Marvels Director Teases Fans With Exciting Plot
As for the topic of superhero fatigue, The Marvels promises to combat this by introducing a “wacky and silly” storyline, as revealed by director Nia DaCosta to Total Film:
“I think superhero fatigue absolutely exists. The biggest difference from the other MCU movies to date is that it’s really wacky, and silly. The worlds we go to in this movie are worlds, unlike others you’ve seen in the MCU. Bright worlds that you haven’t seen before.”
While the filmmaker assured fans that they will enjoy the movie, it will also tug at their heartstrings. DaCosta further added:
“This movie also deals with specific, personal, sometimes sad things, but no, it’s been nice to work in a different world for sure.”
Despite the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, fans can still expect The Marvels to hit theaters on November 10.
