It’s only a few short months away until we get to see EA Sports first non-FIFA licensed football game, succinctly named EA Sports FC 24. Very imaginative, that’s for sure. The meat and bones of the game look to be largely the same as the previous umpteen iterations, but according to EA Sports, by no longer having to adhere to the FIFA licence, they have more creative control and are promising a ‘revolutionary experience’. We’ll see.
One gameplay feature that is barely changing from what we can tell is Ultimate Team. The card-based squad builder looks set to continue on its merry-microtransaction-way, emptying the pockets of those with slight gambling addictions, and the parents of children that just want that one player because their friend has him.
EA Sports FC 24 Icons
In Ultimate Team the purpose has always been to manage your players and manage to get the best, most fluid and entertaining team possible. Want Erling Haaland to be paired with some unknown French striker? Sure, go ahead. Make sure the chemistry is good though. Want to take the entire Manchester City squad and swap out Ederson for De Gea? You can, but it’d be a risk. Have you seen De Gea lately?
The point to be made is that nearly anything is possible, and whilst you can do something, you maybe shouldn’t, because over the years EA Sports have implemented various versions of their chemistry mechanic, meaning it’d be footballing suicide to have players out of position, or those of opposite leagues and nationalities, as they just won’t play well together.
That is of course, with the exception of the icons. Now in previous versions, the icons (essentially retired footballs brought back into the game, usually in their footballing prime), could slot in nearly anywhere, and they’d always have max chemistry with the players around them, making them not only ridiculously amazing cards to use and play with, but also good cards to help you build a fully functioning squad. EA Sports FC 24 icons look to be much the same, and now we know some that have been confirmed, or at least as much as they’ve been leaked from the version of the game currently in testing.

Now, not all of these may make it into the final game, such is the point of testing a game, but there are certainly some contentious choices here. So far, the leaked list is as follows:

Some of these inclusions are inarguable, with the likes of Bobby Charlton, Zico, Gianluca Vialli and Aguero certainly earning their right to be there, but then you have Arda Turan and Tomas Rosicky? Come on. All this, and the much-talented and long-standing FIFA legend Rui Costa has reportedly been downgraded from a legend to a ‘Hero’ card. Why?
Again, these are not going to be the final cards, or at least, not all of them, we hope. There will be some added, some taken away and a lot will stay, but who were you expecting to be included this year?
