After months of teasing, producer Jon Landau finally confirmed that a sequel of Alita: Battle Angel is in the works. As fans know, Landau has expressed his desire to work on this sequel before as well during Avatar: The Way of Water‘s premiere. Although he hinted that the live-action movie might return to the screens soon back then, it is only recently, in an interview that he gave the confirmation.
Allegedly, Alita would not only come equipped with the technological advancements of Avatar: The Way of Water but will also be made on a big budget. As such, fans of the manga and the live-action both are over the moon with this news.
Jon Landau said Alita: Battle Angel is only possible because of Avatar
Noting their overwhelming success in the Avatar franchise, Jon Landau mentioned, “I think what we’ve learned from Avatar is how much more facial nuance and subtlety that we can get into characters that we want to be emotional and emote that are humanoid.” And this is the exact formula they have utilized and will use again in Alita‘s sequel. As Landau explained,
“Alita would not have been possible, but for what we did on Avatar. Avatar: The Way of Water would not be what it is but what we did for Alita. And now let’s put that back and give it back to Alita.”
Thankfully, it seems that Jon Landau, James Cameron, and the original movie’s director Robert Rodriguez, are all returning for the project.
Landau noted, “We’re talking to Robert [Rodriguez, who directed the original] and talking to Rosa [Salazar, who portrayed Alita] and all is good.” This inevitably made the fans campaigning for it extremely hopeful about experiencing their favorite character going on adventures on the big screen.

Jon Landau and James Cameron’s billion-dollar collaborations
Alita: Battle Angel is not Jon Landau and James Cameron‘s only collaboration project. In fact, they have a history of turning their collaborations into some of the most important movies in the entire cinema history.
Starting from Titanic in 1997, they made a movie that is still equally just as relevant and appreciated among the audience. Not to mention that with its recent re-release, its box office collection turned into a whopping $2.28 billion.
The other most notable one is obviously the first Avatar movie that completely reset the world of fantasy science-fiction and amazed the world to such a degree that it remains to this date the highest-grossing movie of all time at a staggering $2.9 billion, with Avatar: The Way of the Water coming in third at $2.3 billion box office collection.
Naturally, the interest Jon Landau and James Cameron took in Yukito Kishiro’s Gunnm manga made waves. And the anticipation turned fruitful when the live-action movie was released in 2019 gaining $405 million at the box office and a massive fan following. As a result, Landau’s recent comment, “We’re working on it,” has finally put their fears to rest.
