Thankfully, whether it was a slip of the tongue or an intentional bit of viral marketing, leading man and voice actor Matthew Poretta announced that the upcoming horror sequel is “supposed to come out in October”.

Alan Wake – Horror’s Next Great Franchise?

When released in 2010, many fans considered the game the next step in horror. At the time the survival horror genre was severely lacking, with no new Silent Hill games for a few years, and Resident Evil firmly turning towards action horror, so fans were thankful for a game that was not only genuinely scary at times, but novel and innovative in it’s gameplay.

“The story follows bestselling thriller novelist Alan Wake as he tries to uncover the mystery behind his wife’s disappearance during a vacation in the small fictional town of Bright Falls, Washington, all while experiencing events from the plot in his latest novel, which he cannot remember writing, coming to life.”

For anyone that may have seen the Twin Peak’s television series, you’ll have a fair idea of exactly what the tone and feeling of the Alan Wake universe is. Following Wake as he attempts to find his wife and put an end to the mysterious goings on’s in Bright Falls, the game has you guessing the entire time you’re playing. Add to that the cinematic feel of the game, and you’ll understand why the franchise has some fiercely loyal – and demanding – fans.

Unfortunately, Remedy decided that other than a single piece of sub-par DLC shortly after release, fans would have to wait thirteen years until the next instalment, other than an appearance by the world and its main character in the also excellent Control in 2021.

Over the weekend Matthew Poretta appeared on YouTube podcast ‘Monsters, Madness, and Magic’ to discuss a multitude of things, and of course was questioned for some more information on the upcoming sequel.

“I’ve been working on it,” Porretta said, “That’s supposed to come out in October. We’re in the middle of working on it now.”

Remedy CEO Tero Virtala said back in February that the team was planning to have all content in place “soon”, which would line up with why Perotta was in Finland recording and working on the game, although the knowledge that they’re still working on voice and motion capture this late into 2023 for such a potentially gigantic game doesn’t fill us with confidence it’ll meet the touted 2023 release, especially with the spate of high profile AAA releases that have been postponed, like the upcoming Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and Starfield.

Not much is known about Alan Wake 2 at present, but if Matthew Poretta is correct and the game is supposedly launching in October – right before Halloween, no less – we’ll start to see more marketing materials and concrete information from the developer.
