While there hasn’t been a bounty of Zombie shows offered by Hollywood, most that have premiered have made a big mark in pop culture. One of the most famous and highly regarded post-apocalyptic zombie series is The Walking Dead. Recently, another show has joined the list and it’s The Last of Us.
While the stars and makers of the HBO show have been hesitant to label it as a zombie show, it can’t be denied that it falls into the same genre. However, lead star Pedro Pascal believes that there’s a significant difference between the two shows
Pedro Pascal Defends HBO’s The Last Of Us
Pedro Pascal plays Joel in HBO’s The Last of Us. He, as well as his co-star Bella Ramsey, who portrays Ellie, have received rave reviews for their performances in the show. The post-apocalyptic show, which is a live-action adaptation of a game of the same name, has garnered critical and commercial appreciation. As expected, with so much media and fan attention have come comparisons with other shows of the same genre, especially The Walking Dead.
Pascal, in an interview with USA Today, addressed this topic without naming The Walking Dead. He expressed that The Last of Us shows relationships more intimately than any other dystopian show. The actor said:
“More than any other dystopic show I’ve ever seen or been a part of, this is about a relationship in a very, very intimate way. There’s something so tiny and intimate at the center of this huge and horrifying world.”
Scott Gimple, The Walking Dead’s chief content officer agreed that the two shows are different. However, he thinks that they can all co-exist without fighting for space with each other. As per Gimple:
“There are some amazing creators that have gotten involved in it (The Last of Us) and I think it’s incredibly different than ‘The Walking Dead.’ It’s a very, very different take. I think there’s room for all of us, with zombies and the different ways of telling zombie tales.”
The Last of Us has been renewed for a second season and fans of the show can’t wait to see what will happen with Joel and Ellie next. Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin, the co-creators of the show, have confirmed that there will be two more seasons at least. However, they have stated that they don’t intend to make the show a long-running franchise like The Walking Dead.

The Last Of Us Will Have A Definite Ending
During an interview with GQ, Neil Druckmann, the co-creator of the series and the creator of the game the show is based on, was asked how he plans on folding the expansive The Last of Us Part 2 game into one season. To this Druckmann said that there will be more than one season. Craig Mazin, the co-creator of the show jumped in and confirmed it. He said:
“You have noted correctly that we will not say how many. But more than one is factually correct. [Laughs].”
So will The Last of Us end after three seasons? The creators aren’t sure. However, Mazin in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter stated that he will know when the time has come to end the show. He further stated that he doesn’t want it to keep going indefinitely. Mazin said:
“I don’t have any interest in a spinning-plates-go-on-forever show. When it becomes a perpetual motion machine, it just can’t help but get kind of … stupid. Endings mean everything to me.”
As of now, it looks like the show will go on for two more seasons at least. It remains to be seen if Druckmann and Mazin will stretch out The Last of Us any further than that.
The Last of Us season 1 is streaming on HBO Max.
