Following the writer’s strike in Hollywood, major studios like Marvel, Netflix, and Sony have decided to miss out on the promotional panel at Comic-Con in 2023. The star-studded event is likely to bear the risk of an empty panel.
The fans who are eager to witness it will also abstain from it. Moreover, the major studios might miss out on this great opportunity as they have upcoming shows in line that won’t be a part of the event. However, there is still a silver lining, as fans may get to witness shows.
Why are major studios canceling their attendance at ComicCon?
San Diego ComicCon is a renowned non-profit event that holds events like awards ceremonies, the annual Masquerade costume contest, and previews of upcoming feature films. Previously, the event faced massive drawbacks due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as no events were conducted during that time and all the promotions were held online. However, ComicCon made a bang with its comeback with a masked-and-vaccinated convention, and it turned out to be a success.
History might repeat itself this time, as many studios have decided to avoid participating in the event following the Writer’s strike. The Strike majorly impacted the star-studded event as major companies like Netflix, Universal Pictures, Marvel Studios, Lucasfilm, and Sony Pictures decided to skip the event.

Fans who have been eagerly waiting for the event to arrive might miss out on the most anticipated upcoming films like the Captain Marvel sequel, The Marvel, Haunted Mission from Disney, and Ahsoka, a Lucasfilm project. Other shows that won’t be part of the event are HBO’s True Detective Season 4 and House of the Dragon Season 2, Sony Pictures’ Gran Turismo and Kraven the Hunter, and Universal Pictures’ Last Voyage of the Demeter, Strays, and The Exorcist.
Apart from that, highly anticipated, high-budget series on Netflix like One Piece won’t be a part of the event as well. Reflecting upon the situation at SDCC, Comic-Con’s spokesperson, David Glanzer, stated,
“With regard to the strike and its possible effects on Comic-Con, we tend to refrain from speculation or forecasting. I will say, our hope is for a speedy resolution that will prove beneficial to all parties and allow everyone to continue the work they love. Until then, we continue to diligently work on our summer event in the hopes of making it as fun, educational, and celebratory as in years past.”
The event is scheduled to commence on July 19, but looking at the current situation, it’s presumable that it may face the risk of empty panels.

What’s the silver lining in this scenario?
The Writers Guild of America (WGA), which started on May 2, has spread to such an extent that even studios and actors are being negatively influenced by it. While many studios will be missing out on showcasing their highly anticipated shows, there are still some shows that are expected to make it to the event.
Warner Bros. will not be completely pulled out of participating in ComicCon, as reportedly, it will be bringing some animation titles to the event. Moreover, DC Studios will also be showcasing its highly anticipated upcoming films like Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and Blue Beetle.
