Will Smith’s Interview With Oprah Winfrey
Often waving the banner of happiness and self-love, Hollywood’s infamous couple Will Smith and Jada Smith boast about their relationship on different occasions. Even during the 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Will Smith touched upon the concept of personal happiness and self-care in his relationship with his wife.
Addressing his wife’s infidelity with their son’s friend August Alsina, Smith spoke about their period of separation. Confessing how they never actually separated, the actor stated, “You know, it’s really funny. We never actually like officially separated”. Further getting into the detail of their marriage, Smith confessed how he quit the responsibility of making his wife happy.
“We realized that it was a fantasy illusion that we could make each other happy. We agreed that she had to make herself happy and I had to make myself happy. Then we were going to present ourselves back to the relationship already happy—versus demanding that the other person fill our empty cup. We just decided, ‘You have to figure out how to be happy.’”
The Men in Black Star further promoted his mémoire Will and discussed how irrespective of public scrutiny and humiliation, the couple decided to stand by each other and support through the odds.

Will Smith Discusses Happiness In Marriage
Finding happiness in a relationship is often considered difficult, especially with the burdens and responsibilities levied on each partner. However, it seems the Smiths have figured it out for good. Often portraying their relationship as a “perfect marriage in their own imperfect way” Smith mentioned having heartfelt conversations in their relationship. Thus, Oprah Winfrey touched upon the aspect of infidelity and asked if the two agreed upon an open marriage.
“We talk about everything. I think the difficulty that people have and difficulty in discussing it is people only think in terms of s*x.” Will Smith revealed. Moving forward with his explanation, the 54-year-old actor stated the greater goal of their relationship, “But the goal is not a s*xual goal. It’s spiritual. We are going to love each other no matter what.”
“Since we are talking about it, Oprah, let’s just talk about it: No woman can make me happy, so I don’t need to look for one to try and make me happy. No man can make Jada happy, so she don’t need to go look for one to make her happy. We both know that. There is no person that will fill your hole.”
Thus, giving up on the responsibility of making each other happy, the Smiths instead decided to find happiness on their own. Calling love dangerous and “the most fearful place” Will Smith further concluded with his opinion of mending a broken heart just to open it for love again.
