In 2022, Robert Pattinson made his debut as the caped crusader in Matt Reeves’ The Batman. The film was appreciated for its realistic take on the Batman lore and for its unique vision for Gotham. Lead actor Pattinson also gained praise for his depiction of a younger and novice Bruce Wayne.
With global box office earnings of over $750 million, Warner Brothers Studios greenlit a sequel for the superhero film. With The Batman – Part II, officially being released on October 3, 2025, new reports are buzzing about the villains that Batman will be facing. One particular villain, who has made appearances in past Batman films, is speculated to be involved.
Robert Pattinson’s Batman Trilogy
Before Robert Pattinson’s appearance, WB was planning on a connected universe for DC characters like its competitor MCU. Ben Affleck, who donned the cape and cowl in the Zack Snyder-directed Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was said to reprise his role as well as direct a standalone Batman film. However, after multiple delays and personnel changes, Affleck stepped down as the director.
War of the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves soon stepped in and was entrusted to make his version of Batman. While Reeves initially tried to keep connections to the DCEU, he then changed his plan to focus on a younger Batman. Subsequently, it was decided that The Batman would be separate from the DCEU and would not be featuring Ben Affleck.
The role then went to Robert Pattinson. Matt Reeves’ The Batman was released in March 2022 to universal acclaim. The film also starred Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle and Paul Dano as The Riddler. Reeves revealed that he intended The Batman to be the first part of a planned trilogy and Pattinson was also equally excited to return as the caped crusader.
In April 2022, a sequel was formally announced, with Pattinson and Reeves said to return. Reeves had already set up the Joker in the first film, played by Barry Keoghan. He also had plans to introduce classic villains such as the Court of Owls, Mr. Freeze, and Clayface. However, recent reports also mention one more threw one more villain from Batman’s Rogue Gallery in the mix.
Harvey Dent Two-Face In The Movies
Harvey Dent is a former District Attorney, who turns into a supervillain after mob boss Sal Maroni has acid thrown at him, burning half his face. Dent adopts the monicker Two-Face, perpetually obsessed with the duality of human existence. He is usually seen with his signature coin, which he flips to make important decisions.
Two-Face was played by Aaron Eckhart in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight. The Joker manipulates Dent after Rachel Dawes, who he was engaged to, dies during a hostage situation. Dent dies at the end of the film, with Christian Bale’s Batman taking the fall for his murder. While this iteration of Two-Face is conceptualized entirely by Nolan and his writing team, a more comic-accurate version was initially depicted in Batman Forever.
Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever was a sequel to Tim Burton’s Batman Returns. While Jim Carrey’s Riddler is the main antagonist in the film, Batman Forever features Tommy Lee Jones portrays Two-Face. The film also depicts the character’s back story in the comics accurately.
Lee Jones’ campy portrayal and Batman Forever was panned by fans. This was exemplified by the director’s follow-up film, the disastrous Batman and Robin. While Lee Jones did not return for the sequel, his performance is widely regarded as a very comical version of the character.
Recently, Syl Abdul of Geekosity mentioned that his sources indicated the inclusion of Two-Face in The Batman – Part II. He says,
“It was being floated around the last 48 hours about Two-Face…in The Batman – Part II, and it was kind of casually thrown out there, and then other people kind of picked it up. Other insiders…wouldn’t put too much stock into that. “I ran it by my sources. I think they’re on a pretty good roll…[and] it sounds like this is true.”
There is still no confirmation on whether or not Two-Face will be a part of the film, or who would be essaying the iconic character. With Matt Reeves at the helm, fans are assured that the filmmaker would do justice to the complex villain.
