Henry Cavill is one of the most famous and adored celebrities in Hollywood, and he has made a name for himself by working on a plethora of successful projects. His portrayal in films such as Man of Steel, Mission: Impossible – Fallout, Enola Holmes, The Tudors, and many more are immensely popular among the fans. While Cavill has played several iconic roles in his career, it looks like his portrayal of Geralt of Rivia in Netflix’s The Witcher is the most iconic of all.
The Enola Holmes actor played the protagonist for three seasons in the show, he decided to part ways with the project because the producers of the show were moving away from the source material. Sadly, Henry Cavill’s last season in the show was poorly received by the fans, and Tomasz Baginski, the executive producer of the show has blamed the fans for the show’s failure.
The Witcher’s Executive Producer Blames The Fans For Show’s Failure
Season 3 of Netflix’s The Witcher featured Henry Cavill for the last time as Geralt of Rivia. Many fans are disappointed with this season of the show because poor writing complicated storylines of the show, and deviating from the source material, led to a massive drop in the viewership of the popular adaptation.
The King of Nerds publicly expressed his dissatisfaction with the direction of the show, before he ultimately announced his departure from the show. And now, Tomasz Baginski, the executive producer of The Witcher explains how complicated storylines are to satisfy the “Americans.” While talking to Wyborcza, Baginski explained how the American fans of the show made the show too popular, and gradually the writers of the show struggled to stay true to the source material.
“When a series is made for a huge mass of viewers, with different experiences, from different parts of the world, and a large part of them are Americans, these simplifications not only make sense, they are necessary. It’s painful for us, and for me too, but the higher level of nuance and complexity will have a smaller range, it won’t reach people.”
However, this is not the first time when Tomasz Baginski has criticized the fans, as he said in a different interview, that young fans of the show are more emotionally driven than the plot of the show.
“When it comes to shows, the younger the public is, the logic of the plot is less significant…Those people grew up on TikTok and YouTube, they jump from video to video.”
Despite the criticism from the fans, Tomasz Baginski explains how the shift from Henry Cavill to Liam Hemsworth playing the role of Geralt of Rivia would be a canon event, and he gives a rational explanation for this shift.
Tomasz Baginski Justifies The Shift From Henry Cavill to Liam Hemsworth
Netflix’s The Witcher is based on two separate materials, the first being the games, and the other being the novels that the games are based on, written by Andrzej Sapowski. During an interview, he explained how an arc from the last segment from Lady of the Lake, the final book of the series, justifies the change in appearance of Geralt of Rivia, from Henry Cavill to Liam Hemsworth.
“Many book readers forget what Andrzej Sapkowski did in the fifth volume of the saga. For me, this is one of the most important things in the whole story. I’m not talking about specific events, but the narrative framework that was introduced in this book.”
“Suddenly, at the beginning of the book, we learn that everything we’ve read so far might not have been true. And this cannot be compared with, for example, the currently popular concept of the multiverse, where out of nowhere there are many different realities.“
He explained that the readers of the novel would suddenly learn what they have been reading till now was not totally true, and the character’s change in appearance is simply a part of this. Hence, according to legends, some would say Geralt of Rivia looked like Henry Cavill while some believed him to look like Liam Hemsworth.
