5 Memorable Viral Video Games (& 5 That Were Overhyped)

In the age of the internet, games gain popularity easily with the help of Twitch streamers, memes, and even peer pressure. Many games fall in and out of the spotlight of the gaming network again and again. 10 years back, mobile games were extremely popular, everybody would jump on the Temple Run and Flappy Bird fleeting trend, playing those games and perceiving how far they each got.

Yet, just because a game becomes a web sensation, doesn’t really mean it’s good. A great deal of the time, a game’s stupidity in concept and execution is actually why they become a web sensation in any case.

1) Memorable: Among Us

This Mafia or Werewolf styled game became a viral sensation during the COVID-19 quarantine and has remained extremely relevant to all. Even though it was initially released in 2018, it gained popularity in 2020 and is still popular.

The game was successfully executed making it extremely fun to play with friends. There are one to three imposters in a crew of spacemen, and it is up to the players to find out who the imposter is before getting killed. From football stars to celebrities, this game was loved by all.

2) Overhyped: Fall Guys

Fall Guys gained popularity when quarantine was just starting, but after its month in the sun, it seemed to fall from grace at a rapid descent. The concept of this game was fun, with 60 players competing against each other to be the only jelly bean character standing at the end of the obstacle courses.

Many people play it but this game has become somewhat irrelevant now.

3) Memorable: Untitled Goose Game

Untitled Goose Game was quickly popular upon release because of its silly (and adorable) concept. Gamers get to play as a threatening goose who threatens a neighborhood. The goose takes things, peck residents, and causes all-out turmoil all through the small town, all to take a bell from the miniature replica of the town that also acts as the villagers’ prized possession.

The game gives the players a to-do list which is full of puzzles. The player must emerge as a menacing goose to solve each puzzle and advance to the next stage.

4) Overhyped: SCP: Secret Laboratory

The concept of this game was quite interesting, one player gets chosen as a random SCP and is sent around the map to kill the other players. SCPs are very similar to Creepypastas. They tell short stories about haunted artifacts located in an unknown facility. But what ruined this game was the fact that it’s an open world, so trolls can seemingly pop in at any time to create chaos, and players need a rather large group of people to make it actually fun without just getting lost.

SCP: Containment Breach was a huge hit for horror fans all over the world. It had an extremely similar theme to the cult classic game, Slenderman.

5) Memorable: Phasmophobia

Phasmophobia was released in September of this year under early access. With 3 friends players can play as ghost hunters and investigate haunted houses and facilities, using different ghost hunting equipment such as EMF readers and Spirit Boxes.

The players can experience a very different approach towards the game using the VR compatibility. This horror game is sometimes terrifying but always fun and has become a viral success in the gaming world.

6) Overhyped: Human: Fall Flat

Human: Fall Flat is a platform puzzle game that doesn’t really work out as well in single-player mode, but the moment a friend joins it becomes incredibly silly and fun. This game became trendy as it was incredibly popular to play with other people.

The main reason why this game falls under “overhyped” is that it doesn’t have the most replayability. Once you solve the puzzles, it gets old really fast.

7) Memorable: Pokémon GO

Pokémon GO was a massive hit in 2016, with close to 45 million players worldwide. It became not just a smash-hit game, but a global cultural phenomenon. There was even a Pokémon GO Frappuccino! How many games get a drink named after them at Starbucks? How many games inspire 200,000 Spotify playlists?

Gameplay sees users encountering the eponymous creatures in real-world settings, utilizing mobile devices’ GPS. Pokémon GO users can catch and train the Pokémon, then battle against other users, mimicking the gameplay of the videogame series.

8) Overhyped: Jump King

Just like Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy, Jump King has a simple challenge: you are at the bottom of a massive vertical level, and you must make your way to the top. There isn’t any particular story except a few talkative NPCs and the promise of “a smoking hot babe” waiting for you at the top of the tower. All that needs to be focused on is your jumping.

While addictive, this game definitely has a ton of room for some raging and definitely feeds into the “self-torture” elements that many gamers seem to become obsessed with.

9) Memorable: Minecraft

Minecraft was released back in 2009 and it still manages to stay relevant today, mainly due to its simple concept which can be enjoyed alone or with friends which leaves room for some pretty fun gameplay and creative creations. Some may argue that Minecraft isn’t a viral game, but it is probably the most viral game in existence.

10) Overhyped: Getting Over It With Bennett Foddy

This game was the predecessor of Jump King. This game tries to be philosophical considering the fact that you play a man in a giant pot. It was definitely made to be stupid. The story revolves around a character named Diogenes who resides in a giant metal cauldron. He wields a giant hammer in order to attach himself to different items in his environment as the players attempt to climb and move around the steep mountain. This game even has really weird and cringy motivational quotes said by the creator of the game each time the player dies.
