$353M Franchise Starring Margot Robbie's Suicide Squad Co-Star Confirmed As Direct Prequel To Arnold Schwarzenegger's Terminator

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Terminator was one of the first movies to set the tone about using Artificial Intelligence and its dangers. One of the first of its kind, it laid the path for future projects in the realm and more installments in the franchise. While many wondered where this Skynet actually came from, it has been recently revealed that the prequel to the hit franchise has already been made.

And it is none other than the original 1987 movie RoboCop. The prequel to Terminator thus also contains the RoboCop remake starring Margot Robbie’s Suicide Squad co-star Joel Kinnaman.

The 1987 movie RoboCop is based on a police officer who is revived as a Supercop/Cyborg after being killed by a gang of criminals. Named RoboCop he is soon proved to be unstoppable as he goes against the very organization that created him, battling AI and Corruption.

Meanwhile, Arnold Schwarzenegger‘s Terminator is based on a post-apocalyptic world where a self-aware AI called Skynet has declared war against humanity. As Schwarzenegger’s Cyborg assassin, Terminator battles it, one wonders where Skynet came into existence in the first place. The Frank Miller and Walter Simonson written RoboCop vs The Terminator #1 reveals that Alex Murphy aka RoboCop mind is merged with Skynet which eventually created its self-aware nature.

Furthermore, it is also revealed that Terminator’s development and design are based on RoboCop’s. Thus making the original RoboCop and the 2014 Jole Kinnaman starrer RoboCop the prequel to one of the largest sci-fi franchises ever. However, it is worth noting that due to Terminator’s diverging timelines and narratives, there are multiple possibilities of how Skynet came about. This makes it even more probable that in one of these timelines, RoboCop exists in the same universe.

RoboCop To Get A New Remake

Fans want a Terminator-RoboCop crossover

RoboCop was an influential film within the larger genre of science fiction. Creating a perfect blend of dystopian themes with social commentary helped create a memorable yet thought-provoking narrative for future work. Despite its popularity, the subsequent installments of its 2014 remake weren’t well received. Now it has been reported that there would be a new reboot called ‘RoboCop Returns‘.

While not many details have been reported about the potential reboot, it is rumored that it would be taking more inspiration from the original RoboCop. While fans of the series, as well as the Terminator franchise, have been eager for a Terminator and RoboCop crossover, the news of a RoboCop reboot hasn’t been taken too well. Fans would rather have the two entities go against each other or go together against Skynet since they have already had a pretty good RoboCop remake.

The Terminator can be streamed on Hulu.
