3 Years Ago, Not One But Two Call of Duty Games Decimated GTA 5 to Become 2 Best-Selling Titles That Year - Can Modern Warfare 3 Do the Same With GTA 6?

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is the sequel to MW 2 and will continue the narrative from the previous game. The game is closing on its release and anticipation is building among gamers. Modern Warfare 3 will bring new features and gameplay improvements. It could be one of the best-selling video games or even top the list, to heights even GTA 6 would find hard to reach. That’s just speculation right now but if that does happen, it won’t be the first time that a COD title would leave behind a GTA game. In 2020, two Call of Duty games cruised past GTA 5 and many other big names and topped the best-selling games list and GTA 5 did not even make it to the top 20. Shocking right?

Two Call of Duty Games Emerged as Best-Selling Titles in 2020

Flashback 3 years ago, it was a strange year due to the pandemic when the majority of people were asked to stay home and gamers had nothing better to do than play games, which saw the game sales rise in more than the last 12 months. This is also attributed to the modern consoles, Xbox Series, and PlayStation 5 that were launched in early November and brought in a new generation of games with unbelievable capabilities.

The year, 2020 saw a surge in game sales in the US, and according to the report shared by NPD, Activision topped the list with two of its games in first and second spot in the US. 2020’s Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War took the first spot and 2019’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was at number two. As per NPD analyst Mat Piscatella, Call of Duty was ranked as the best-selling gaming franchise in the US for the record 12th consecutive year. This wasn’t at all surprising considering the popularity of the battler-royale mode, Warzone that was available in both games.

Can Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Beat GTA 6 in Sales?

It is possible that Modern Warfare 3 could beat GTA 6 in sales, and considering its history of topping charts it is very likely. However, it wouldn’t be fair, if GTA 6 wasn’t even considered to beat MW 3 as the game has been in development for quite some time now and is being touted as the most expansive open-world game ever. GTA 6 has a rumored $2 billion budget and allegedly 400 hours of gameplay.

The game has the potential to be the best-selling title in gaming history and several leaks surfacing on the internet have certainly piqued the interest of the gaming community. Still, it will find tough competition from Modern Warfare 3 as the reboot returns with action-packed game modes and maps, new features, expectedly new heroes, and well, let’s settle this, the best-selling gaming franchise for 12 consecutive times in the US.
