The year 2022 saw Hollywood bring out multiple projects and roles for the inclusivity of the LGBTQ+ community. With varied characters that bravely tackled the judgemental eyes of society, 2022 saw one of the most diverse transgender representations in its movies and shows.
With the year 2022 coming to an end, Hollywood took a step towards a proper and healthier inclusivity of trans people in the movies and shows which were actually portrayed by trans people.
How Hollywood Brought Trans People To The Center Stage
2022 saw a large number of films dedicated to the portrayal and the lives of trans people that face society every day. Although far from over, Hollywood indeed took a step in the proper direction of trans representation by allowing actual trans people to portray said roles.
With movies like The Lost City starring Brad Pitt, Channing Tatum, and, Sandra Bullock, people got to know about Patti Harrison who shared the screen along with these actors. Portraying the character of Allison in the movie, Patti was given the chance to portray her acting skills. Even though she came out as a transgender woman, Hollywood showcased the people that gender doesn’t define skills.
With dark movies like Women Talking, actress August Winter was brought in to portray the character of Melvin in the movie. With a heartbreaking storyline of women having to reconcile with their faith after a horrendous event shatters their lives, the movie throws the audiences face to face with grim realities and the horrors of society. The proud notion comes from the fact that trans people are not being only cast for the stereotypical role of trashy humor or being one of the people to die in a movie, but are actually cast in normal roles for the people to accept.
Trans Representation In Hollywood Is Just The Beginning
Although Hollywood has been faced with several allegations of not having enough diversity in mainstream content, many directors are making their way past the boundaries. Sarah Polley, the director of Women Talking saw to it that trans people get their point across the screen and to the audiences.
The portrayal of Rhaenyra Targaryen, played by the brilliant Emma D’Arcy in HBO’s House of the Dragon is also a step further in the direction since Emma D’Arcy came out as a non-binary person. With the depiction and inclusion of non-binary, trans, and the LGBTQ+ community more and more in Hollywood, 2023 will indeed see several changes in Hollywood’s style.
The Emma D’Arcy starrer House of the Dragon is available to stream on HBO Max.
