One Piece is one of the most popular anime and manga franchises in the world, and it recently received a live-action adaptation at the hands of Netflix. This adaptation lasted eight episodes and got a generally positive reception from critics and fans which led to it being renewed for a second season.
The protagonist of the series, Monkey D. Luffy, is after the titular One Piece which will make him the King of the Pirates. However, it’s not exactly a peaceful road to becoming king, with there being several enemies on the seas for Luffy to fight, both Marine and pirate alike. Though Luffy has toppled many great enemies, including some of the most powerful in the world, there are some already introduced in the Netflix adaptation that he will never be able to beat, at least in single combat.
Luffy can’t beat this master swordsman
The master swordsman that Luffy won’t be able to beat in a one-on-one fight is none other than Dracule Mihawk, the current holder of the title of World’s Strongest Swordsman. This is also the title that Luffy’s close friend and fellow Straw Hat, Roronoa Zoro, aspires to. Mihawk used to be a rival of Red Hair Shanks, Luffy’s inspiration for what a pirate captain and their crew should be like. Furthermore, it is more than likely that Mihawk would be an Emperor if he and his crew sailed through the Grand Line.
While a battle between Dracule Mihawk and Luffy would no doubt be a fun one, it doesn’t seem likely to happen since Mihawk is Zoro’s goal, not Luffy’s. Apart from that, even in his Gear 5 form, Luffy is shown to be vulnerable to cut attacks, the likes of which won’t be a problem for Mihawk to perform given that he fights with a large sword.
Luffy can’t beat this Marine in One Piece
The Marine in question is Luffy’s grandfather, Monkey D. Garp, who also holds the rank of Vice Admiral in the World Government’s Navy. In his prime, and to an extent even in his old age, Garp was as powerful in combat as any one in the Marines. He played a big part in Rocks D. Xebec being toppled over and no longer ruling the Grand Line, and is also known as “the Hero of the Marines”.
Luffy and Garp actually fighting is very unlikely though, as Garp wouldn’t let his job as a Marine Vice Admiral interfere with his familial relationships and loyalty to them. Even if the two did end up trading blows, they wouldn’t be trying to hurt each other seriously.
