One of the greatest cinematic marvels and larger-than-life films, Godzilla was released in 1998. The movie was a massive buzz among the fans, and it could be sighted on billboards around the country. Seeing the gigantic lizard on the silver screen gave goosebumps to the audience. The film was co-written and directed by Roland Emmerich. It was the first Godzilla film produced by a Hollywood studio.
The film earned a massive profit, and there were talks about producing a sequel. However, the plan was dropped due to a major mistake in the first film.

Godzilla Creators revealed one big mistake in the film
The American monster film Godzilla was a massive hit among the audience and grossed $379 million worldwide. Despite earning a massive profit, the film was termed a box-office disappointment. Sony had high expectations from the film, due to which the profits seemed lesser. The producer confessed that the film was not the best version of the Hollywood-produced Godzilla film.
Devlin shared,
“We made an intellectual decision that sounds good in the room but is really terrible for making a movie. We decided that Godzilla was neither good nor evil — it was just an animal looking to reproduce. It was a threat to us because it puts us at risk in order to survive.”
“That’s an interesting way to approach it, but it doesn’t tell the audience how they’re supposed to feel about the title character,”
Devlin added that in the King Kong-like moment late in the film where Godzilla is fatally injured the audience was confused.
“They were like, ‘Am I happy he’s dying? Am I crying? I don’t get it.’ So that was a huge mistake: Had I been able to do it over again, I would have made Godzilla an absolute hero, and everyone would have been rooting for him the whole time.”
Devlin shared that the audience was confused about their emotions toward Godzilla which made it difficult for them to connect with the film.

Dean Devlin wanted to create a sequel to the Godzilla film
The producer and director of the film had planned to correct their mistakes in the sequel of the sci-fi film. Devlin recalled,
“I said, ‘All right, we can redeem ourselves'”
The film Godzilla ended with the death of the creature but it was disclosed that one of the eggs had produced a tiny hatchling. As per the plot, the offspring would have been discovered by the previous movie’s hero, Matthew Broderick’s scientist, Nick Tatopoulos. They would have set off for the mysterious location called Monster Island.
Devlin recalled,
“We really wanted to go to Monster Island. In the original Godzilla movies, Godzilla started off as a monster, but became a hero by the time Monster Island was introduced.”
However, Sony passed on Devlin and Emmerich’s Monster Island pitch due to the average response to their first movie. Nonetheless, Devlin put some of his sequel ideas to produce a short-lived Godzilla animated series. It had a run of two-season run on the Fox Kids channel.
The most recent film in the Godzilla series is Godzilla vs. Kong featuring Millie Bobby Brown in the lead role.
