2020 may not have been the greatest year for theatrical releases as COVID-19 pushed all its potential blockbusters to 2021 and beyond. But things were good for the first 3 months, and the streaming services really took over beyond that point. Netflix brought us some exquisite content. In fact, it is possible that 2020 was the best year for Netflix Original movies. But did you know that there were several 2020 films that had their sequels greenlit? Some of those sequels have been confirmed to be under development, while others are yet to be officially announced. Here are the following 2020 movie sequels that we should be looking forward to:
Confirmed:
Bad Boys 4
Will Smith & Martin Lawrence’s third Bad Boys film brought in over $426 Million at the worldwide box office. It was the biggest Hollywood film of 2020, and Sony has already announced a part 4. Well, the announcement was inevitable since there was a post-credits scene that had teased the narrative of Bad Boys 4. BB3 introduced Mike Lowrey’s son as a villain. But now he will be given a redemption arc. Will Smith has films like Emancipation, Planes, Trains & Automobiles, and a few others lined up to be shot. But we still think that Bad Boys 4 will hit theatres in mid-2023, or perhaps early 2024. Let’s see if this one’s going to be the final outing of Martin Lawrence’s Marcus Burnett.
Sonic The Hedgehog 2
Right after the film hit theatres back in March 2020, Sega and Paramount greenlit a sequel. Last we heard, this film will run its production from March 2021 to May 2021. That would put it on track for its April 8, 2022 release date. You’ve got to be excited for this one as besides Tails, we’re also going to see Knuckles in the film. What’s more, Jason Momoa might end up voicing the strong red Echidna. We already had a great cast with James Marsden, Jim Carrey, Tika Sumpter, and Ben Schwartz as Sonic the Hedgehog. Momoa’s addition to the bunch will only make the film better.
Extraction Sequel
Chris Hemsworth’s Extraction became Netflix’s highest viewed Original film as it was watched by 99 million accounts within the first month of its release. While Netflix doesn’t really go out of the way to announce its sequels, we still got to know about Extraction 2 soon after the release. In fact, it is supposed to begin filming in late 2021. Last we heard from the Russos, the script was being written. Considering the kind of ending that the first film had, there’s a chance that this second movie might be a prequel. Tyler Rake was proven to be a total bad-ass in the first film. But now we’ll dive deeper into his character, and probably find out what happened to his child. Sam Hargrave is set to return in the director’s chair, and we should expect to see the film in late 2022, or early 2023.
Wonder Woman 3
Wonder Woman 1984 did not have great numbers at the worldwide Box Office. It wasn’t even loved by the critics. But Warner Bros. still liked the reception when the film opened on HBO Max. It had great viewership numbers and led to a significant subscriber influx on the streamer. Soon after the film’s release, WB greenlit the threequel very swiftly. In the past, Patty Jenkins has confirmed that the third one will be set in the present day. But we shouldn’t expect to see it any time soon as Jenkins is going to be involved with the Cleopatra movie, and Lucasfilm’s Rogue Squadron until 2023. While we wait for Wonder Woman 3, WB or HBO Max will be releasing an “Amazon Spinoff,” which will lead us into Wonder Woman 3.
Bloodshot 2.0
If there’s any film that suffered the wrath of COVID-19, it was Vin Diesel’s Bloodshot. It absolutely bombed at the Box Office as the theatres began to shut down right after its release. As a result, it made only $37 million and didn’t even break even. But the creatives and producers were happy about the film because of its response to VOD. Just because of its VOD performance, Bloodshot 2 was announced. Now, Vin Diesel is set to return as Bloodshot 2.0, and we really hope that Sony will go for an R-Rating for the sequel. Bloodshot is basically a tech-Deadpool. Don’t you think this unkillable Valiant comics superhero will do better with an R-Rating?
Sequels that haven’t been officially greenlit, but are rumored to be in development:
The Old Guard 2
Netflix’s The Old Guard was among the best action movies that 2020 had to offer. It was just perfect in every way, and we will be getting multiple sequels for sure. Netflix is yet to make the official announcement. But director Gina Prince-Bythewood is ready to return. Even writer Greg Rucka wants back in. Here’s what director Bythewood said about a potential sequel:
“I know that Greg Rucka, who wrote the graphic novel in the script, he always envisioned this as a trilogy. I know where the story goes, and it’s pretty great. So if the audience is eager for it, there’s definitely more stories to tell.”
Charlize Theron was stunning and she’d be wanting to return as Andy. But it remains to be seen when The Old Guard 2 will arrive on Netflix because Theron is also supposed to film Atomic Blonde 2, School for Good and Evil, and possibly even the last two Fast and Furious movies. So, we don’t think that The Old Guard sequel will begin production any time before 2022.
Enola Holmes 2
Just like The Old Guard 2, Netflix has had discussions for multiple Enola Holmes films. Millie Bobby Brown was quite remarkable as Enola, and the film did turn in some great viewership numbers. So, Enola Holmes 2 seems like a no-brainer. It will happen for sure, and we really hope that Henry Cavill’s Sherlock Holmes will have a bigger part to play alongside Enola.
Spencer Confidential II
Mark Wahlberg and Winston Duke’s Netflix Original delivered 85 million household views upon its release. That’s a monster hit for any Netflix film. Now it wasn’t the best, but people did enjoy it enough. With great viewership numbers and the setup for part 2, we’re sure that Netflix will soon be reuniting Duke and Wahlberg for yet another installment. Although, we cannot be certain about the release date for Spencer Confidential 2.
Project Power 2
With its trailer launch, Jamie Foxx’s superhero outing showed great potential. Then upon its release, it showcased some great superhero moments throughout. But the overall product wasn’t as pleasing as we expected it to be. Still, at least 75 million Netflix subs saw it within the first month. With these viewership numbers and a great setup for a sequel, Netflix might turn Project Power into a multi-film franchise.
Birds of Prey II
Birds of Prey turned out to be the least successful DCEU film. And there’s a major chance that a sequel won’t happen. Even when Margot Robbie was recently asked about the sequel, she said, “I don’t know. Nothing imminent at this stage, nothing worth mentioning.” But I’m going to speculate that Warner Bros. could run the franchise with a sequel that’s made exclusively for HBO Max.
