First, there was The Simpsons, then South Park showed up and shocked audiences with its raunchy humor. Eventually, we ended up with an entire genre of adult animation, and for a long time, we thought we would only get as good as Family Guy or The Simpsons. But once and a while something special comes around and it managed to captivate audiences in a way nothing else does. That’s what the team at Adult Swim did with Rick and Morty, creating one of the funniest yet compelling series ever to hit television screens. As the show continues, we will be taking a look at seasons 1-6 and the 10 Greatest Rick and Morty Episodes produced so far.
Season 1, Episode 2 Lawnmower Dog
The pilot is great, but it was this episode that set the standard for comedy. Rick creates a device that allows dogs to understand human speech, which leads to an entire canine uprising. Meanwhile, Morty struggles to pass a test at school and asks Rick to enter his dreams to help him. However, things go awry when they get stuck in a dream and encounter a Freddy Kruger knockoff named Scary Terry. The use of meta-humor from Nightmare on Elm Street and Inception just adds to the genius comedy writing.
Season 1, Episode 5 Meeseeks and Destroy
You’d be surprised to find out that Mr. Meeseeks is probably one of the most quotable characters in the series. Rick gives the family a box of Meeseeks, creatures that exist to complete one task and then disappear. However, Jerry and Beth’s tasks prove more difficult than expected, leading to chaos and destruction. Meanwhile, Morty forces Rick on an adventure of his choosing. They find themselves in a chaotic world, attempting to help a village against giants.
Season 1, Episode 6 Love Potion #9
A pivotal episode in the series and surprisingly only 6 episodes into the series. Morty convinces Rick to buy him a love potion so that he can make his crush fall in love with him. However, things go awry when the love potion spreads throughout the entire town, causing chaos and destruction. So much is unraveled when the potion spreads into an entirely new strain that changes the entire series. Probably one of the most important episodes of the series.
Season 2, Episode 4 Total Rickall
The Smith family is attacked by alien parasites that implant false memories of themselves into their hosts’ minds. Rick, Morty, and the family must work together to identify and eliminate the parasites before they take over the world. The episode features a wide variety of wacky characters, including a talking pencil, a reverse giraffe, and a sentient shrimp named Mr. Poopybutthole. The episode is known for its clever writing, hilarious gags, and unexpected twists.
Season 3, Episode 1 The Rickshank Rickdemption
Another pivotal episode in the series, that sets a precedent for the rest of the series. Rick is captured by the Galactic Federation and put on trial for his crimes. Meanwhile, Morty and Summer struggle to adjust to life without Rick. The episode features several shocking revelations and plot twists, including the revelation that Beth and Jerry’s marriage has been saved by a virtual reality simulation. An episode that makes you question everything you’re watching with some incredible storytelling.
Season 3, Episode 3 Pickle Rick
Probably one of the most recognizable episodes throughout the series, the one that had people so bewildered, they had to see it for themselves. Rick turns himself into a pickle to avoid going to family therapy. However, things quickly go awry when he gets washed down a sewer drain and must fight his way through a series of obstacles to get back to his lab. Meanwhile, Beth, Summer, and Morty attend therapy and confront their own issues. The episode is known for its outrageous premise, over-the-top action, and clever exploration of family dynamics.
Season 3, Episode 7 The Ricklantis Mixup
The episode takes a break from the Smith family and instead focuses on a group of Ricks and Morty from various alternate dimensions who travel to a mysterious city known as the Citadel. The episode explores themes of power, corruption, and social inequality as we see the different ways that Ricks and Mortys can live their lives in different dimensions. The episode’s complex storytelling gives us one of the most unique in the series and deserves a place among the 10 Greatest Rick and Morty Episodes.
Season 4, Episode 8 The Vat of Acid Episode
Morty becomes fed up with Rick’s recklessness and demands that he create a device that will allow him to escape from any situation. Rick creates a “save point” device that allows Morty to return to a specific moment in time whenever he wants. However, Morty’s reliance on the device leads to a series of disastrous consequences. The episode is known for its clever exploration of the consequences of time travel, as well as its dark humor and how it manages to perfectly blend dark humor into storytelling.
Season 4, Episode 10 Star Mort Rickturn of the Jerri
This episode stands as a catalyst for Beth’s choice to make Rick clone her, as we are introduced to Space Beth. After Beth gets Rick’s help to clone her and keep one on Earth and the other to go on a space adventure, things start to get a bit confusing. Space Beth returns home after she discovers a detonator in her neck placed by Rick. At the same time, the Galactic Federation gets involved and the family must fight their way through the Federation.

Season 5, Episode 10 Rickmurai Jack
With probably one of the most impressive openings of any series, as the show turns the series into an anime for a brief moment. We watch the aftermath of Rick and Morty’s separation and Rick’s relationship with his two crows. But when Rick finally decides to come back, we are taken back to the Council of Ricks and realize a new Morty has taken over. We also get an in-depth look at Rick’s backstory and his traumatic past that has made him into who he is now. A monumental series that still has left us with questions even after the 6th season’s release.
