It’s no surprise that MCU has Hollywood’s top actors. Many A-listers in fact gave their career trajectory a spike by signing films and becoming a part of the MCU. Take the career graph of Chris Hemsworth for example. It wasn’t until Thor that he earned any name outside Australia. While some made their career by their roles in the MCU some found success once again. You know you’re going big if it’s Marvel Studios
From Adam Sandler to Emily Blunt, here are some actors who have expressed their desire to be a part of the MCU for playing notable characters like Black Widow and Captain America.
1. Emily Blunt
Blunt is mostly known for her role in A Quiet Place. According to sources, she could have taken on a very prominent role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She was in fact Marvel’s first pick for the portrayal of Black Widow. Her audition was a success and she was offered to play the part. However, she had to cancel the project because of a scheduling conflict with Gulliver’s Travels in 2010
2. Timothée Chalamet
While we all love Tom Holland’s portrayal of Spider-Man, it’s not known to many who he had to compete with in order to get the role. Timothée Chalamet was initially shortlisted for the role but Holland won it in the end. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Chalamet had a very stressful time during the audition. He said, “I read twice and I left sweating in a total panic. I called my agent, Brian Swardstrom, and I said, ‘Brian, I thought about this a lot and I have to go back and knock on that door and read again.”
3. Asa Butterfield
In the competition for playing Spider-Man was another young chap of Hollywood. Asa Butterfield rose to fame for his role in the film Hugo. When the role of Spider-Man was being cast, Butterfield was preferred by many fans. During an interview with Collider, Butterfield expressed his thoughts on auditioning and not getting the part.
4. Alison Brie
Most famous for voicing Diane Nguyen in BoJack Horseman and playing the lead characters in the show GLOW. She’s been so keen on being a part of the MCU that she has auditioned multiple times.
In an interview with ComicBook, she said, “I’ve gone through auditions for Marvel movies and auditioned a million times for roles with three lines and you are begging for them. And I’d be glad to get them! It’s brutal, it just is,”
She expressed great interest in playing Sharon Carter in the 2016 film Captain America: Civil War
5. John Krasinski
Known globally for his portrayal of Jim Halpert on the sitcom The Office, John Krasinski was interested in playing Captain America before Chris Evans won the role in 2010. In an interview with Insider, Krasinski said “I love Chris, I’ve been a friend of his for a while. Those movies are so much fun and I love watching them, I tell him I’m first in line to see his new movies. It’s that zen thing of let life take you where it may and I never would have been here if I had gotten ‘Captain America.'”
6. Ryan Philippe
Rose to fame with his role appearing as Billy Douglas on the soap opera One Life to Live, Ryan Philippe also wanted to play the iconic Captain America. On a SYFY WIRE interview, Philippe said. “I’m really into it. It’d be fun. My son would love it. He’s six years old,”
7. Liam Hemsworth
His brother is already known as one of the top 3 Avengers. However, it is not known to many that Liam had auditioned for the role of Thor first. Apparently, it was Joss Whedon who persuaded director Kenneth Branagh to give Chris Hemsworth another chance after his first audition was turned down.
8. Simon Pegg
You know him as Ethan Hunt’s sidekick Benji from the Mission Impossible series. Apparently, Pegg was originally considered to play Scott Lang in Ant-Man. However, Paul Rudd was cast instead of Pegg. However, this loss didn’t deter him from wanting to be in the MCU in the future. He spoke to Screen Rant and said he would like to play the British superhero Captain Britain as he himself hails from England.
9. Adam Sandler
We’ve had our fair share of laughter with Rocket’s comic timing in MCU. Thanks to Bradley Cooper. However, a well-known comedian could have taken on the role of Marvel’s famous raccoon. According to Collider, Adam Sandler was in talks for portraying Rocket and had even auditioned for it in the early 2010s. However, his audition failed to impress director James Gunn, who gave away the part to Bradley Cooper
10. Mary Elizabeth Winstead
You might recognize her from DC’s Birds Of Prey as she’s the only actor from this list who was REALLY keen on being a part of the superhero world. Getting rejected for the role of Sharon Carter in Captain America: Civil War didn’t stop her from achieving her dreams. However, given how well she did as Huntress in Birds Of Prey, Winstead could still join the MCU’s Phase 4 as another strong female character.
