Recently, a Twitter/X user found Ms. Marvel star Iman Vellani’s Lettboxd account. On the account, the user discovered that the actress gave Marvel’s 2019 movie, Captain Marvel a 2-star rating. The movie, which marked the beginning of actress Brie Larson’s MCU journey, was not well-received by fans.
The film performed extremely well at the global box office but when compared to other Marvel movies, it is often ranked at the bottom of the list. The critics pointed out that the character had much more potential and the plot was predictable. Despite its flaws, one thing that everyone, including Iman Vellani, can agree on is that Larson’s performance was outstanding.
Iman Vellani gave Captain Marvel a 2-star rating
Long before her days as Ms. Marvel, actress Iman Vellani was just another Marvel fanatic rating Marvel movies on Letterboxd. Recently, a Twitter/X user came across Vellani’s account and found her review of Marvel’s 2019 movie, Captain Marvel. The actress gave the movie 2 stars and wrote,
“These stars are not for Brie Larson, I will sacrifice my own life…for Brie Larson.”
The actress left the rating on September 2020, roughly 2 years before her MCU debut as Ms Marvel. Who would’ve guessed that Vellani will one day get to work alongside Brie Larson?
Fans reacted to Iman Vellani’s review
After Vellani’s review went viral on social media, fans quickly gave their opinions on it. Captain Marvel received mixed reviews from the fans, so many agreed with Vellani’s review.
Captain Marvel is often hated for excessive visual editing and bland storyline. Brie Larson’s introduction as the character was surely exciting but the execution could’ve been better.
Captain Marvel earned more than $1 billion at the global box office
Captain Marvel was first teased at the end of Avengers: Infinity War as Nick Fury sends her an emergency signal on a modified pager. This created a lot of anticipation around the character, so when Captain Marvel (2019) was announced, the expectations were quite high.
From the financial aspect, there is no doubt that the movie was a worldwide success. It earned roughly $1.1 billion at the global box office, making it the fifth-highest-grossing film of 2019. The audience’s opinions were somewhat divided. The film received praise for Brie Larson’s performance as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, however, it was pointed out that the plot was not as innovative as other movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
