Zachary Levi Dares James Gunn to Turn Shazam 3 into a "Superhero Zombie Movie": "I would love to kill zombies"

James Gunn and Peter Safran, the two CEOs of the newly formed DC Studios under Warner Bros. Discovery have released the names of 10 projects that will form the first chapter of the new DCU. Sadly, Shazam 3 isn’t on that list. However, that isn’t stopping the star of the film from trying to persuade Gunn to give his movie a final farewell. Zachary Levi and the cast of Shazam! Fury of the Gods spilled what they want to see in a possible third film of the franchise and it involves zombies or maybe lazing under the Tuscan sun.

In an interview with Fandango, the cast of Shazam! Fury of the Gods was asked what they would like the next movie in the franchise to be. Zachary Levi expressed that it’s a difficult question to answer because the kids in the cast are growing up too fast and that can quickly change the dynamic of the future film. However, in the end, he relented and answered that he would love to fight off zombies as the superhero. Here’s what he said:

“With our particular franchise, it’s been very difficult for me to wrap my head around what would be the movie. Partly because all the kids are growing like weeds, so I don’t even know how that applies to the dynamic of what the movie’s going to be. I’ve never seen a superhero zombie movie. Genuinely, I would love to kill zombies, and I think it would be really fun to do Shazam (3). Not an undead Shazam, but rather we’re having to fight off like hordes of the undead.”

But the rest of the cast didn’t really agree with Levi’s idea of fighting the undead. Helen Mirren, who reportedly plays Hespera in the movie, said that she would like the sequel to be like the movie Eat, Pray, Love. Levi jumped in laughing and said:

“Just laughing, drinking vino and being like ‘who am I? who am I and how do I love myself?’ Yeah that’s what it is.”

However, keeping aside the fun and games, it isn’t confirmed yet if the Shazam film franchise will even receive a third film to round off their trilogy.

James Gunn and Peter Safran are deadset on rebooting the DCU and starting afresh. However, they are open to welcoming back actors who played various characters in the DCEU. During the new DCU slate announcement video, Gunn said that Shazam is a franchise that has mostly been disconnected from the continuity of the DCEU. As such, it could fit in with the plans for the new DCU easily.

The co-CEO also seemingly agrees. Deadline reported that when Peter Safran was asked at the press meet for the slate reveal if the previous DCEU actors could find a place in the DCU, he responded affirmatively. The co-CEO said:

“There’s no reasons why (the previous actors), couldn’t be part of the DCU, we just haven’t decided what the story is that we want to tell that incorporates Shazam or Aquaman.”

Whether that story turns out to be about Shazam killing zombies or not is yet to be seen.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods releases on 17 March 2023.
