In the film Dunkirk, Christopher Nolan cast Cillian Murphy as a shivering soldier. The film’s cast included Harry Styles, Fionn Whitehead, and Tom Hardy. Although Murphy played a minor role in the film, he was a significant character. When the actor for 28 Days Later read the script, he had some reservations about his character. To further discuss Murphy’s role, the 52-year-old filmmaker invited him on a boat.

In an interview, Nolan and Muprhy both talked about how the Tenet filmmaker convinced Murphy to play the part, Nolan said in an interview,

“I’ll talk very frankly about Dunkirk. I remember, Cillian, I called you up, and I said, ‘I really need you for this small but vital part, out on that boat, suffering from PTSD, and I’ll send you a script.’ I remember, very clearly, you called me, and said, ‘Can’t I play a Spitfire pilot instead?’c

He further added,

“Trust is creatively freeing, because you feel like you can try things, and there are no wrong answers, nobody’s going to chastise you, or laugh at you. It’s like, okay, let’s just try a few different things, and then trust on the fundamental level of, okay, we’re going to take you on a boat, and we’re going to sit you on top of an overturned hull, and on a cue, you’re going to jump off into the sea.”

As Murphy had already formed a great bond of trust with the 52-year-old director, he didn’t hesitate to work on his movie even though he had a small part.
