“You won’t find bodies, you won’t find skeletons”: James Cameron’s Chilling Details From His Adventurous Trip to Titanic Wreck Where 1496 Passengers Died

"You won't find bodies, you won't find skeletons": James Cameron's Chilling Details From His Adventurous Trip to Titanic Wreck Where 1496 Passengers Died

James Cameron’s Titanic, on the surface, is a tragic tale of fictional romance embodied to perfection by Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio as Rose and Jack. While the love story didn’t happen in real life, the devastating tragedy did. It’s claimed that about 1,500 people died during the maritime disaster. Now, it looks like history has repeated itself, with the Titan submersible from OceanGate.

It’s presumed that the 5 passengers on board the vessel are now dead. Rescue efforts have found debris of the landing gear from the submarine, and it seems to imply that the vessel imploded. James Cameron had previously explained that at that depth, there’s nothing to be found. Not even skin and bones.

National Geographic interviewed James Cameron to celebrate 20 years of the iconic film’s release. There, the director talked about the reality of the disaster. He explained that there are no bodies of the people who died during that tragedy because it’s impossible for dead bodies to remain intact at that great a depth. He said:

“You won’t find bodies in the Titanic, you won’t find skeletons. The bones actually dissolve to solution very rapidly at that depth. What anybody who has explored the wreck finds is pairs of shoes.”

The Avatar director also talked about how there are also shoes present in the cabins. So these people never got out. He mentioned one instance where they found a pair of woman’s shoes and a pair of girl’s shoes in what was previously a cabin with a hand mirror. But apart from the 20th-century Titanic disaster, the director also gave his opinions on the current Titan disaster that has gripped everyone.

In an interview with ABC News, James Cameron, a diving aficionado and the director of Titanic, said that the similarities between the two disasters struck him the most. He said:

“I’m struck by the similarity of the Titanic disaster itself, where the captain was repeatedly warned about ice ahead of his ship, and yet he steamed at full speed into an ice field on a moonless night and many people died as a result.”

Many people have interpreted his words as a strong rebuke towards the OceanGate CEO because, allegedly, the 5 passenger deaths were completely preventable. Cameron also said that the company was warned by many regarding the dangers of the mission. He said:

“A number of the top players in the deep submergence engineering community even wrote letters to the company, saying that what they were doing was too experimental to carry passengers and that it needed to be certified.”

He also said that it was surreal to see the same kind of tragedy unfold again at the exact same location. More updates regarding the situation are awaited.

Titanic is available on Amazon Prime Video.
