Not only were Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield one of Hollywood’s cutest couples, but they also had the kind of connection where they could call each other out on their bulls*it. And that’s exactly what Stone did after Garfield said something misguided about femininity during a Q&A session while promoting The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
Actress Emma Stone gently but effectively called out the actor and her then-boyfriend Andrew Garfield for a comment that seemed to be a s*xist one.
Emma Stone Reacted to Andrew Garfield’s S*xist Comment
Andrew Garfield let down every feminist in the town when he implied that Spiderman was being feminine by stitching his own costume when a chubby-cheeked British kid asked how he got his costume.
“It’s feminine how?” Emma Stone hit back prompting a hasty defence and an almost audible back-tracking from Garfield, who weakly mused upon the theory that “we all have feminine in us”.
Garfield immediately goes on the defensive, replying, “It’s amazing how you took that as an insult.” Stone remained calm, saying, “No, I’m not taking that as an insult, I’m asking how it’s feminine.” To this, Garfield replied,
“I would say that femininity is about more delicacy and precision and detail work and craftsmanship – like my mother, she’s an amazing craftsman.”
The two began dating in 2011 and called it quits in 2015.
Why Did Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone Break Up?
The La La Land actress and the Tick Tick Boom! actor met for the first time when they were picked to play Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy in The Amazing Spider-Man. And eventually, the two fell in love.
The couple dated for four years, traveling the globe and working on another Spider-Man movie together. Stone said to Vogue in 2016 that Garfield was “someone I still very much love.” The next year, Garfield expressed similar opinions, telling Vanity Fair, “There’s so much love and respect between us. I’m her biggest art fan”.
There is a lot of speculation that the reason Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone split up was because they were struggling with the challenges of a long-distance relationship. It seemed that Andrew Garfield’s work commitments hampered him from meeting her. At the time, a source told People,
“Emma understands his work anxieties – it’s why she originally pulled out of Cabaret last year and only did it this year – but they’re taking a break from seeing each other.”
Both chose not to publicly disclose their breakup at the time, which left their admirers with many unanswered concerns.
