Matt Damon revealed Ben Affleck changed after a tragic incident
Matt Damon and Ben Affleck have been close friends for a long time. However, the demise of Damon’s father had a massive impact on the life of the actor. His father passed away at 74, which created a sudden change in his bond with Affleck. Damon shared that the tragic loss assisted them to appreciate the gift of time.
The Departed actor shared in a conversation with Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace,
“After my dad passed in 2017 — and Ben was very, very close with him — it changed something in us. I think and you know, you start to really […] you start to see the end game and you start to feel like I want to make every second count. I don’t want to fritter away time anymore.”
Both actors became serious about their career and started working towards building their career.
Matt Damon and Ben Affleck collaborated after 24 years
Damon added that felt another shift in their bond after the release of the 2021 Beatles documentary Get Back. He shared that he called Pearl Harbor actor,
“I called him and I said, ‘Look man, you know, we were talking about (working together more) and it’s been 25 years or something since Good Will Hunting like … what are we doing? You know, we both kind of hit the lottery. Why aren’t we working together more often?’”
Ben Affleck and Matt Damon collaborated on The Last Duel. Before the release of the film, Matt explained why it took them 24 years after the release of Good Will Hunting to work together on a project, and he shared that it was just a timing issue.
“[We] assumed [writing] would be so time-consuming that we’d never be able to do it. If we just work during hours that we could easily carve out, we could get a lot done.”
The Last Duel was released in 2021 and featured Matt Damon, Jodie Comer, and Adam Driver in lead roles. They also worked together for the 2023 film Air, about the story of basketball star Michael Jordan’s sneaker deal with Nike.
The buddy stars are listed as producers on the upcoming film The Instigators, which follows the story of two thieves, on a run with the help of one of their therapists after a robbery goes wrong.
