Deadpool is one of the most memorable and iconic movies that has ever come out of Marvel comics. It is absolutely bizarre and almost feels like a fever dream at some points. Its characters entertain the audience in the most peculiar ways and Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson has probably got to be one of the funniest characters in television history.
With a production budget of $58 million, the movie did exceptionally well, earning over $781 million worldwide. It became adored by fans and a sequel quickly followed, which did even better than the original. So it is pretty surprising to find out that Deadpool had quite a difficult time going into production or even being approved by its studio.
David Fincher and James Cameron Helped In Making Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool
David Fincher who is responsible for Gone Girl and Fight Club; and James Cameron who is the mind behind the record-breaking Titanic and Avatar, are two of the most well-respected directors in the show business. So it is interesting to know that when Rehertt Resse, a co-writer for Deadpool, showed the script to the two, they had quite a lot to say about this.
“They read the script each of them at two independent key moments during the script’s development” explains co-screenwriter Rhett Reese. “And each one of them was kind enough to go to 20th Century Fox and essentially throw in their good word just saying ‘Hey, what are you guys doing with Deadpool? You should be making this!’ David was a help before Jim and he was just kind of nudging along the way. And then Jim ultimately weighed in in a key decision node moment and got Fox to free up some money to try a PG-13 draft at the time – that was not Jim’s idea, that was Fox’s idea.”
The two were extremely impressed by this script and went to 20th Century Fox and asked them to look into this project more. Though Fincher casually mentioned this, Cameron was quite adamant on this and asked Fox to free up some money for this project.
David Fincher and James Cameron Helping Make Deadpool Was Never Supposed to Be Public Knowledge
Tim Miller, the director of Deadpool, admitted to the fact that aside from the help James Cameron and David Fincher gave in getting Deadpool greenlit, it would seem that the two also helped in the production aspects of the movie, though this was never meant to be public knowledge. The two helped Miller along the way, guiding him as seasoned individuals in the profession.
Tim Miller talked about the involvement of Fincher and Cameron in the movie,
“First of all they’re probably mad at me for ever having… because that was never intended to be public knowledge! Listen – the industry listens to tastemakers and you could not find two gentlemen who have better taste in what should become a movie or be made into a movie and so I just thought that maybe they could help push the boulder up the hill a little bit, which they kindly did.”
It would seem that without the two exceptional directors, Deadpool may never have been made. If it had, it would not have been this soon, nor the same witty, quirky gem we have grown to love.
