Actor Anthony Mackie came under scrutiny in 2015 after he made a misogynistic statement during his appearance on The Wendy Williams Show. Host Wendy Williams was talking about gender roles when Mackie then cut her off by saying,

“I do believe that if you want a sandwich, you make daddy a sandwich.”

A lot of people in the crowd were dissatisfied with what Mackie said. Williams was also criticized on social media for pointing out that men also have roles in society.

The actor explained his point

Anthony Mackie didn’t stop there as he continued to defend his point by pointing out the roles of a man,

“No, no, no, let me ask you this. If me and you are out, and somebody says something slick to you, you want me to smack him in his mouth, right? So if I take you on a date, and I say, ‘Look, baby, we gonna go Dutch?'”

When Williams said, ‘No!” Mackie continued, “Exactly! If we’re walking up to the car, and I don’t open your car door, what do you say?” Williams replied, “Open the door!” Mackie then said,

“You better believe it! So you make daddy a sandwich! If I’m outside cutting that grass, bring Daddy some lemonade! It’s hot outside and I’m cutting all this grass!”

After the clip went viral, Marvel fans were left wondering if the actor is worthy enough for a major role in the franchise. He played the role of Sam Wilson/Falcon in Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) and went on to reprise the character in subsequent MCU films, including Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Captain America: Civil War (2016), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019) and Falcon and the Winter Solider (2021) series.

Falcon and the Winter Solider aired on Disney+ in 2021. Many fans on social media speculated that Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes could get romantically involved as the story progresses. Mackie then addressed those speculations, saying,

“So many things are twisted and convoluted. There’s so many things that people latch on to with their own devices to make themselves relevant and rational. The idea of two guys being friends and loving each other in 2021 is a problem because of the exploitation of homosexuality. It used to be guys can be friends, we can hang out, and it was cool. You would always meet your friends at the bar, you know. You can’t do that anymore, because something as pure and beautiful as homosexuality has been exploited by people who are trying to rationalize themselves.”

The community was not happy with Mackie’s statement. Although it wasn’t very clear what the actor is trying to imply with this, fans felt like the actor got uncomfortable because of the speculations.
