Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer (2023) has became an unprecedented success, owing to the enormous buzz and hype of the ‘Barbenheimer’ phenomenon. The biographical drama based on J Robert Oppenheimer and the creation of the atomic bomb, has already passed the $700 million mark, making it one of the highest grossing R rated films ever made. Besides the main protagonists played by Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr, the film had an important role of Jean Tatlock, played by Florence Pugh. In a recent interview, Pugh discussed her involvement in the film and Nolan’s approach of casting his actors in his films.
Christopher Nolan Was Not Sure Whether Florence Pugh Would Accept his Offer
In an interview with MTV, Florence Pugh explained how she got involved in Oppenheimer and Christopher Nolan‘s reservations about the role that was given to her. Nolan made her know that her role would be limited but important to the proceedings of the film. She recalled her first meeting with Nolan saying,
“I knew that Chris [Nolan] really, really, wanted me to know that it wasn’t a very big role and he understands if I don’t want to come near it. And I was like, ‘Doesn’t matter. Even if I’m a coffee maker at a café in the back of the room, let’s do it.’”
Pugh could see that Nolan was nervous whether she would accept the role. He tried to convince her by saying, “We’ll send you the script, and honestly, you just read it, and you decide if it’s, I completely understand the sizing thing”. Pugh was too excited to work with a visionary like Nolan that she immediately accepted the role, despite her limited role in the film.

Oppenheimer is Nolan’s Biggest Hit Outside of Batman
By crossing $700 million worldwide, Oppenheimer has officially become Chris Nolan’s second biggest success outside of his Batman Films, just behind Inception (2010). Despite being an R rated film, the audiences have embraced the biographical drama and the performances of the film, mainly that of Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr who played J Robert Oppenheimer and Lewis Strauss respectively.
Oppenheimer is currently playing in theatres worldwide.
