Nevertheless, before they began filming this movie, his co-star Michael Caine was skeptical of his ability to perform well in that role.

Caine has been in the movie business for nearly eight decades, during which he collaborated with some of the top echelons of directors and actors in blockbuster projects. In 2008, the actor made his character debut as Alfred Pennyworth in Christopher Nolan-directed The Dark Knight.
The 90-year-old star once revealed an intriguing anecdote behind the casting of late iconic star Heath Ledger who played the main antagonist as Joker in their shared movie. Nolan once admitted that he was looking for a courageous actor to play such an iconic role, and he offered it to Ledger because he knew he could pull it off effectively.
In a candid interview, the London native actor recalled when he asked director Nolan who he would be the villain, and he informed The Joker, which left him wondering who could top, actor Jack Nicholson-helmed role in the project. He shared:
“When Chris called me [about The Dark Knight], I asked, Who’s the villain? He said, ‘The Joker.’ I thought, ‘Oh, Jack Nicholson, who’s going to top that? I thought for a moment we’re in trouble here. That’s not a great decision. You don’t try and top Jack.’”
The Inception movie star continued,
“I asked Chris, “Who’s going to play it?” and he said “Heath!” I thought: “Now that’s the one guy that could do it!” My confidence came back. And then when I did this sequence with Heath, I knew we were in for some really good stuff.”
Michael Caine was unsure whether any star could surpass Nicholson’s performance until he learned about Heath Ledger’s casting as Joker. The actor claimed that after filming a sequence with him, he knew that Ledger would give his best in this movie.
Michael Caine Talked About Heath Ledger’s Portrayal as the Joker
In an interview, Michael Caine opened up about his experience working with legendary star Heath Ledger who famously portrayed the role of the Joker in Christopher Nolan-directed The Dark Knight. Caine claimed that the actor played his part with nuance and helped bring this epic character to life, saying,
“Heath’s Joker is incredible. He is very, very scary. I turned up every month or so to do my bit, then go back to London. I turned up and had to do a bit where Batman and I watched a video done by the Joker to threaten us. I had never seen him, and he came on the television, and I completely forgot my lines. I quit. Because it was so stunning and was quite amazing.”
The movie has a star-studded cast ensemble featuring Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Heath Ledger, Gary Oldman, Aaron Eckhart, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Morgan Freeman. The late actor Ledger, who died on 22 January 2008, dominated the silver screen with his performance, and the year after his sudden death, he was awarded a Best Supporting Actor Oscar at the 81st Annual Academy Awards for his excellent version of the Joker in the titular film, which his family collected.
