Mark Hamill played the iconic role of Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars movies. Hamill made his movie debut in the first film of the Star Wars original trilogy, Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. The 71-year-old actor played the character in six out of the nine Star Wars movies. The Time Runner actor starred alongside the legendary Harrison Ford in the movies.
Ford took on the role of Han Solo, a smuggler and the captain of the Millenium Falcon who later became a General in the Rebellion. Hamill and Ford continued their roles into the sequel trilogy that began in 2015 with The Force Awakens.
Mark Hamill Knew A Secret That Harrison Ford Didn’t
Mark Hamill made an appearance on The Graham Norton Show along with The Last Jedi co-stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, and Gwendoline Christie. The host reminded Hamill of the big secret in the second film of the original trilogy, The Empire Strikes Back. The Hamilton actor recalled that there were no major secrets or spoilers in the first film, but the scrutiny intensified with the second film.
Hamill revealed how Irwin Kershner, the director of The Empire Strikes Back, met him personally in his dressing room to reveal the big secret. Kershner handed him the script containing the big reveal about Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker. Kershner told him that only three people knew of this secret – Hamill, Kershner, and the producer George Lucas.
The Airborne actor had to keep this secret for almost a year and a half. When the scene was shot, Harrison Ford felt betrayed that Hamill had known the secret and hadn’t told him.
Harrison Ford Was Mad At Mark Hamill
Mark Hamill further revealed that Harrison Ford was not happy with him for hiding the secret. Hamill also felt guilty for not informing Ford or Carrie Fisher about the climax reveal. Doing an uncanny impression of Ford, the Midnight Ride actor showed Graham Norton’s audience how the Blade Runner actor reacted to the big secret:
“At the screening, when that happened, Harrison turned to me and said, ‘Hey, kid, you didn’t f**king tell me that.’ I apologize for the f-bomb, I only use it for historical accuracy! I was so thrilled, because I don’t like having the burden of that. I talk in my sleep, I’m clearly dangerous.”
Interestingly, Lucasfilm chose Harrison Ford to star in the titular role in their movie franchise, Indiana Jones. Meanwhile, Mark Hamill mostly pursued independent movies after the Star Wars trilogy ended. All the Star Wars movies are available for streaming on Disney.
