During an interview with the Hypocondriactor Podcast, Robert Downey Jr. delved into the final moments of his character, Iron Man, in Avengers: Endgame. He revealed that there was a pivotal moment where he nearly uttered different lines at the film’s conclusion, shedding light on the potential alternative directions that could have shaped the iconic conclusion of Iron Man’s journey.
“I had so many alt lines that I wanted to put forward,” Downey revealed. “Oh god, let me think. They were all super smart-a** lines like I was trying to, you know, dumb stuff like, ‘You are so f—ed’ or whatever. You know what, I’ll have to go back to my notes … I get the Infinity Stones and then have the power to snap and have whatever I want to have happen — Oh, I was gonna say ‘Oh, snap.'”
Although it would have been amusing to hear Iron Man say “Oh, snap” while wielding the power of the Infinity Stones to defeat Thanos and his army, fans can’t help but appreciate the choice to retain the iconic line “I am Iron Man” in Avengers: Endgame. Tony Stark’s character arc culminated with those words, providing a fitting conclusion to his journey in his final appearance.
Robert Downey Jr. Didn’t Take Iron Man’s Fate Well
In the book The Story of Marvel Studios: The Making of the Marvel Cinematic Universe by Tara Bennett and Paul Terry, Avengers: Endgame co-directors Anthony and Joe Russo unveiled a poignant detail: Robert Downey Jr., upon learning Iron Man’s fate, was overcome with emotion and shed tears.
This revelation underscores the depth of Downey Jr.’s connection to the character and the profound impact that Iron Man’s fate had on him personally.
“When we started winding down the pitch and getting to his death, Robert started crying,” Joe Russo shared. “And when we were done, he said, ‘That’s f***ing awesome.’ That’s when we knew that we had to do it. Because he felt it.”
