Before Chris Hemsworth took on his breakthrough role as Thor, he had a relatively brief appearance in the 2009 Star Trek film, portraying George Kirk, father of James Kirk. Despite Hemsworth’s fame, his screen time was limited to just 10 minutes, where George sacrifices his life and his spaceship, the USS Kelvin, earning the Kelvin Timeline moniker in the Star Trek world.

Hemsworth’s brief appearance may strike viewers as unusual, particularly if they assume that such a well-known actor would have a more substantial role in the story. In the build-up to the release of Star Trek Beyond, the third installment in the series, in 2016, it was revealed that Chris Hemsworth would return to his role as George Kirk for the sequel.

Will Chris Hemsworth Appear In A Star Trek Movie

While it remains unclear how the writers would have explained his character’s return, it seemed reasonable to bring Chris Hemsworth back for the sequel. By that point, Hemsworth had become a prominent figure in Hollywood, and his brief but impactful appearance in Abrams’ 2009 reboot had left a lasting impression on fans. Additionally, the prospect of a reunion between Hemsworth’s George Kirk and Chris Pine’s James Kirk held the potential for poignant and emotionally charged storytelling.

Sadly, the untitled Star Trek 4 project did not materialize, partly due to the lukewarm box office performance of the third film and Chris Hemsworth’s reservations about the script’s quality. Nevertheless, in an interview with Vanity Fair, where he reflected on his career, Hemsworth expressed his continued willingness to revisit the Star Trek universe.

Chris Hemsworth told Vanity Fair, “There was talk about me doing the film with Chris Pine at one point, the script was put together, and then it fell apart. But if J.J. Abrams called me tomorrow and said: ‘Chris Pine and I want to do it,’ I’d probably say: ‘Yeah, let’s go for it.'”

When Is The Next Star Trek Film Releasing

During Paramount’s Investors Day presentation in 2022, J.J. Abrams confirmed that a new Star Trek film set in the Kelvin Timeline was again in the works. Matt Shakman, known for his work on The Great and WandaVision, was tapped to direct, and talks were reportedly underway with Chris Pine and other cast members from the 2009 Star Trek film.

However, it remains unclear whether Chris Hemsworth will reprise his role as George Kirk, as the project’s current version is based on a different script than the earlier iteration. Chris Hemsworth expressed his gratitude for J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek reboot, revealing that it may have indirectly helped him secure a role in the first Thor movie.

Hemsworth believes that Abrams and Kenneth Branagh, who directed Thor, had a conversation that ultimately led to him getting a callback for the Marvel film. “I do think it helped in many, many ways,” he said.

Star Trek starring Chris Pine, is available for streaming on Paramount+.
