As time moves on and we get newer and better consoles, many gamers look to the past to older generation games that they loved playing; this is what makes emulators such a unique and brilliant idea in gaming as it helps newer consoles be able to run these older games which generally wouldn’t be accessible on that console. Unfortunately, on Xbox, there have been many players using emulators in retail mode on their Xbox through applications that were downloadable on the Microsoft store.
What are the differences between retail and developer mode, and why has it changed?
In the past, Xbox owners were able to use retail mode to be able to access emulators that were accessible from the Microsoft store to be able to emulate older games from older consoles, unfortunately, this has now changed as Microsoft have currently disabled this loophole so that gamers cannot use retail mode for emulators. The reasoning behind this is that developer mode can be accessed by a one-off payment giving the Xbox owner access to developer mode and the ability to access emulators there, which is why Microsoft are now unhappy with players using loopholes to use this feature without paying this one-off fee.
Even though Microsoft have fixed this original loophole, it has come to their attention that a month ago, a group had claimed to have found another loophole to be able to use emulators on retail mode and were also offering to sell this information to Xbox owners through Patreon for $2/£2 a month. Although this new loophole has been on sale on Patreon, Microsoft has already begun to clamp down on Xbox owners who have attempted to make use of this new loophole by applying a 15-day suspension on them.

Why are emulators so important to gamers and Microsoft/Xbox?
Thanks to emulators, we are able to look to the past to play original games that we may never get the chance to play again, and this is something that Microsoft are more than happy to give to gamers. Xbox boss Phil Spencer has mentioned in the past that “My hope (and I think I have to present it that way as of now) is as an industry we’d work on legal emulation that allowed modern hardware to run any (within reason) older executable allowing someone to play any game,” as he believes that emulators are the key to game preservation.
Emulators are an important part of the future to help us to remember the past, but the issue at the moment is that many members of the gaming society are attempting to access this fantastic feature through illegal means, and cause many problems for regular gamers who do not try to break these laws.
