Stepping into motherhood made Sandra Bullock realize how precious her life is, and made her think twice before doing something frivolous. Of course, the acting profession oftentimes requires the actors to perform some life-threatening stunts, although some might be comfortable, others aren’t. Actors like Jackie Chan, Tom Cruise, and Keanu Reeves have cemented their names in the action genre, especially when it comes to performing their own stunts. Sandra Bullock herself had that reputation until she had a baby. The responsibilities that came with having a child prevented her from doing tasks that she deemed risky.
Therefore in an interview with BANG Showbiz at the UK Gala screening of The Heat in 2013, she shared her thoughts and anxieties while doing a stunt after having a child of her own.
Why is Sandra Bullock afraid of doing her own stunts?
After consistently performing her own stunts in action movies, Sandra Bullock has retired. After adopting Louis Bardo Bullock in 2010, the actress became extremely cautious. Motherhood made her think twice before performing a dangerous stunt. During the UK screening of her action-comedy, The Heat in 2013 she spoke to the media outlet BANG Showbiz regarding the matter. She said,
“I insist on doing my stunts all the time. But one thing that makes you reconsider doing your shot is having a child. You go, what if I should fall and die on this one? Would that be a smart move?”
She then went on to explain what both she and her co-star, Melissa McCarthy went through to perform some of the more dangerous stunts in their then-upcoming movie. She revealed,
“We didn’t have crazy stuff to do. There were a couple of dangerous things and Melissa and I were like, ‘Let the stunt people do it’, because the explosives were falling on them. We went and had coffee while people risked their lives.”
Bullock then went on to admit that for the time being, being a normal mom is what she preferred rather than being a cool actress who does her own stunts. She said,
“The thing I like about my life is the school runs. I want to be there for every school project, every school run, and everything else. When you’re doing theatre, the commitment is so great. I say ‘never say never’, but right now I’m so happy in this world that I’m living in.”
Turns out, this might be the only area in which she differs from her long-time crush and co-star Keanu Reeves, who takes a great deal of care in performing his own stunts.

Keanu Reeves, the one that got away
Ever since Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves made their confessions public of having crushes on each other during the making of Speed in 1994, fans have been grieving the possibility of what could have been one of Hollywood’s most beloved power couples. Since then, fans have been gathering how perfect it have been if the two stars got together. Thus, despite getting matched in every possible area, the one that lacked was their particularness of doing their own stunts.
In contrast to Sandra Bullock’s lack of interest, Reeves was passionate and worked diligently to ensure the stunts were as realistic as they could possibly be to this date. Tanner Foust, a professional race car driver, who trained the actor for the latest installment of John Wick also confirmed the fact by saying,
“[H]e was awesome,–He had to do it all one-handed while holding a gun and sometimes reloading it mid-drift. That gave the film guys the opportunity to rip the doors and windscreen off so you could see it was him doing it all.”
Although their friendship never turned into something more, fans hope to see them collaborate in something exciting pretty soon.
Speed is currently available on Hulu Plus to stream.
