Not long ago, at Star Wars Celebration, Kathleen Kennedy denied rumors that Kevin Feige was involved in a Star Wars film, stating they had never discussed it. This led many to believe that the fandom had simply made it all up. However, Feige had previously confirmed his involvement, and writer Michael Waldron discussed being hired to write the script.
Now, the Russo Brothers have come forward to confirm that not only was Feige working on a Star Wars film with Lucasfilm, but they were also in talks to possibly direct it. This contradicts Kennedy’s previous statements and adds more weight to the initial rumors.
Kevin Feige Wanted Russo Brothers To Direct Star Wars
During a recent episode of the SmartLess podcast, the hosts – Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett – delved into various aspects of the Russo Brothers’ career, including the possibility of them directing a Star Wars film, given their fandom of the franchise. The Russos not only expressed their interest but also revealed that there were initial talks with Kevin Feige about it.
“We love ‘Star Wars,'” Joe Russo said. “There were early conversations, there were some early conversations with us. Kevin Feige is a huge ‘Star Wars’ fan, and there were some early conversations about maybe teaming up with Kevin to do ‘Star Wars.'”
The statement has since sent fans into a frenzy, with some demanding the producer to make it happen while some suggesting it wouldn’t be a great idea.
Unfortunately, the SmartLess hosts didn’t allow the Russo Brothers to expand on their interest in directing a Star Wars film, as they quickly moved on to discuss the directors’ ABGO films. Nevertheless, in other parts of the podcast, the Russos delved into their work with Marvel Studios, with a particular focus on Captain America: Civil War.
Kevin Feige’s Star Wars Would Have Screamed Marvel
The Russo Brothers’ recent comments strongly suggest that Kevin Feige was interested in bringing in some of Marvel Studios’ top creative minds for his Star Wars project. Although the plot of the film remains unknown, Feige had reportedly enlisted Michael Waldron, writer of the Disney+ series Loki and the film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, to pen the screenplay.
In addition, MCU stars Chris Evans and Brie Larson had both expressed interest in appearing in the movie, although it’s unclear if they were ever approached. Director Chloé Zhao was also rumored to have signed on to direct the project in late 2021, indicating that Feige may have been in talks with other MCU directors besides the Russo Brothers.
While Lucasfilm has numerous Star Wars films in the works, the next movie that is anticipated to make its way to theaters is the New Jedi Order film. According to reports, the film will follow Rey Skywalker, played by Daisy Ridley, as she strives to restore the Jedi Order 15 years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is set to direct, while Steven Knight will write the screenplay.
