Remember the cute, cuddly, and oh-so-adorable bear, Winnie the Pooh? The character is basically synonymous with a lot of people’s childhood as he looked so lovable while snacking on delicious honey. Well, brace yourselves as the character has “evolved” his taste buds and now prefers humans thanks to director Rhys Frake-Waterfield.
The film, Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, was made with a pretty low budget of less than a hundred thousand dollars. The film even failed to make a lasting impression on the viewers as critics everywhere are giving it a low rating. Rotten Tomatoes itself has spared the film a single-digit rating of 6%. However, none of that seems to matter anymore as the film is bringing in bug bucks for the team!

Even though it was practically impossible to imagine Winnie the Pooh and his friends in a horrifying light, Rhys Frake-Waterfield’s vision made it possible. After Christopher Robin leaves his animal friends behind, the group turns cannibalistic with no one to feed them. After turning feral, Winnie the Pooh and Piglet find themselves on the journey of becoming cold-blooded and ruthless killers.
While that itself is enough to give people the heebie-jeebies, the film isn’t getting the appreciation it might have expected. However, Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey is doing splendidly with respect to the box office numbers. The film was released in the United States on February 15, while it is yet to be released in other countries. Within a few days of its release, Blood and Honey has made over $1.52 million at the box office. Since it was made with a budget of less than $100,000, the film has made a profit of a whopping 152%.
Even though the film has received a ton of negative reviews, Frake-Waterfield has confirmed that a sequel is already going into development. Not only that, but this time the budget might be five times more than that of Blood and Honey! According to a review by The Hollywood Handle, the film is “VERY gory and has some crazy kills.” However, the review continues to say that it is “so bad” that it “made me laugh.” With a much larger budget next time around, we wonder how gorier can the sequel actually be!
Rhys Frake-Waterfield Talks about Pooh and Piglet
If you think that the cuddly characters-turned ruthless killers are just humans in very realistic masks then let us stop you right there. They really are the Hundred Acre Wood residents we know. The director clarified the doubts stating, “Yeah, that’s right. This is actually Winnie the Pooh and Piglet going around killing people.”
When asked why the characters were made to look more like humanoids rather than actual animals, the director stated that it was because it was “more fun” this way.
“I hate this word and I might not be able to say it – anthropomorphic. Basically hybrids. Half-bear, half-man, and half-pig, half-[man]. So that was a decision because I really wanted them to have the ability to hold weapons. So if I made Winnie the Pooh just a bear, he’s got paws. All he will do is go around swiping people and killing them, maybe bite them. But with hands it becomes so much more fun because he has weapons, he can drive a car, I can do all these really interesting things.”
We don’t know about “more fun” but it certainly was a lot more disturbing than if he just had the good ol’ paws! If this wasn’t enough, Frake-Waterfield is also working on a Peter Pan horror remake titled, Peter Pan: Neverland Nightmare. The director sure is coming for our childhood favorites, one by one!
