Both Steven Spielberg and Will Smith have established themselves as heavyweights in Hollywood, each making an imprint on the world of entertainment that will never be erased. Spielberg’s mastery behind the camera has elevated the art of filmmaking, while Smith’s unparalleled on-screen charisma has made him one of the most beloved actors of his generation.
Though the duo collaborated in the 1997 science fiction blockbuster Men in Black, they have not done any film to date as actor-director. While speaking his mind, once Will Smith recalled to The Morning Call on why the acclaimed director never hired him for his movies and Spielberg had a rapid answer to that query.
Why Steven Spielberg-Will Smith Collaboration Never Happened?
Will Smith talked about how a brief conversation with Steven Spielberg changed the way he thought about his acting career during an interview. The Jaws director once faced an inquiry by the Emancipation actor who then wanted an explanation why he had never been given a role in any of his films.
While talking about his chat with Spielberg, Smith said,
“I ran into Steven Spielberg at a party, and I jokingly asked him why he never hired me for his movies. Steven said, ‘Oh, you’re too big for my movies.’ I laughed it off. I said, ‘What the heck is that supposed to mean? Am I too tall?’“
The actor admitted that he wasn’t aware of his reference at the time. However, he eventually realized that he might begin to overshadow his characters because of his incredible star power.
Will Smith Said that He Started to Overshadow His Characters
Will Smith’s filmography is as diverse as it is impressive. From action-packed thrillers like Independence Day and Men in Black to heartfelt dramas like The Pursuit of Happyness and Ali, Smith’s range as an actor has earned him critical acclaim and numerous accolades. He has consistently delivered powerful performances that resonate with audiences of all ages, cementing his status as one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars.
Smith’s undeniable star power stems from his ability to connect with audiences, bringing a unique blend of charisma, humor, and emotional depth to his performances. This charisma has played a significant role in shaping the kinds of roles he has been offered throughout his career. However, sometimes it was more of “Will Smith, the Star” than the character he is portraying.
“The persona I created had become too big for the stories I wanted to tell. I had started to overshadow the characters I played. People see me on screen and go, ‘Oh, look, it’s Will Smith.”
Will Smith’s star power is undeniably a driving force behind the commercial success of many of his films. While there have been instances where his magnetic charisma has overshadowed his characters, Smith has also demonstrated his capability to deliver powerful and nuanced performances that transcend his status as a Hollywood icon.
