“Why can’t I burn the house down?”: Ryan Gosling Was Not Allowed to Add a Passionate Scene With Ex-girlfriend Rachel McAdams in ‘The Notebook’

"Why can’t I burn the house down?": Ryan Gosling Was Not Allowed to Add a Passionate Scene With Ex-girlfriend Rachel McAdams in 'The Notebook'

Back in 2004, Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams gave every teenager a vision of what love should be like by starring in The Notebook. Being an action hero, Gosling had a great but terrible passionate idea that never made it into the film.

As per director Nick Cassavetes, Ryan Gosling came up to him with an idea that was very passionate and symbolically true but it didn’t mean anything. With the dream house that Gosling’s character of Noah builds for Allie, Gosling wanted to burn the house down in an act of passion!

Gosling had always been an action hero. The Notebook would be the first time the actor was ever cast in a romantic lead role but Ryan Gosling aced it. Although portraying a romantic character, the La La Land actor did miss the good old days of some action and hence, had a passionate idea.

As per director Nick Cassavetes, Gosling came up to him and said that he wanted to burn the house down. The house that Gosling was referring to was Noah and Allie’s dream house that Noah had built with his own hands. Ryan Gosling stated that the burning of the house represented the character arc of Noah and that he was “cleansing my fire”. Director Nick Cassavetes, on the other hand, had no idea what Gosling was trying to say.

“Gosling thought it would be appropriate for Noah to burn down what had become his character’s life’s work. ‘Ryan wants to talk to you about what he’s going to do. He wants to go prepare for it, feel it, live it, explore other options for it. He’d come to me and say, ‘Why can’t I burn the house down?’ I’d say, ‘Because I don’t even know what that means.’ And he’d say, ‘Cleansing my fire!’”

Well, the scene was not allowed and hence, never made it to the final version of the movie. Not taking sides, but the scene would have indeed symbolically signified the change in Ryan Gosling’s character arc.

Although it has been almost 20 years since The Notebook was released, Ryan Gosling has stayed the same. With the overtly loving character that he portrayed in the 2004 movie, Gosling seems to follow suit by being an overt lover to his companion Eva Mendes.

At the premiere of Margot Robbie’s Barbie in which Gosling plays the role of Ken, the actor attended the premiere in a pastel pink suit. What’s adorable is that the actor wore a necklace with the letter “E” attached to it signifying his love for his partner Eva Mendes. With accolades to its name, The Notebook starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams is available to rent on Apple TV+ across the U.S.
