Game of Thrones star, Emilia Clarke, who is currently seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe Disney+ series, Secret Invasion, has been known for using a green screen in her work. Thus, this shows that she is firmly fond of this process of filmmaking. The British actress has recently refuted those actors who claim that acting in front of a green screen is not “real” acting.
With roles in Game of Thrones, Star Wars, The Terminator, and now the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Secret Invasion on Disney+, Clarke has appeared in a number of well-known franchises. Many of these roles required her to interact with green screens.
Well, she even justified her support for green screen acting by stating that veteran actors, Samuel L. Jackson and Olivia Colman would not want to take part in it if it wasn’t “real”.
Note that, she is working with both of these heavyweight actors, along with Ben Mendelsohn, Don Cheadle, and Kingsley Ben-Adir in Secret Invasion.

Emilia Clarke Responds to Green Screen Acting Criticism
For the unversed, actors who use green screen technology must perform in front of a solid-color background, usually green or blue. The colored filler is then swapped out for any background image or footage during post-production editing by visual effects artists.
Emilia Clarke has acted in a number of acclaimed series, including Game of Thrones, Star Wars, and Terminator, all of which heavily rely on CGI. She recently debuted in the Disney+ series, Secret Invasion, which is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Speaking in a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times about the myths surrounding green screen acting, the 36-year-old British actress argued that:
“The stigma is that people don’t do any acting in these shows.”
The Last Christmas actress further asked:
“And then you’re like ‘Well, then why are they asking all these great actors to do it, and why are they saying yes?’”
Her remarks came a few years after Anthony Hopkins criticized green-screen acting in an interview with The New Yorker. The 85-year-old veteran actor was talking about his time portraying Odin in the Thor movies.
Anthony Hopkins and Jennifer Aniston Once Criticized Green Screen Acting?
In a 2021 interview with The New Yorker, Anthony Hopkins famously disparaged green screen acting. The Oscar winner was thinking back on his own experience playing Odin in the Thor films within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“On ‘Thor,’ you have Chris Hemsworth – who looks like Thor – and a director like Kenneth Branagh, who is so certain of what he wants. They put me in armour; they shoved a beard on me. Sit on the throne; shout a bit. If you’re sitting in front of a green screen, it’s pointless acting it.”
On the other hand, Jennifer Aniston, who is well-known for her work in the television series FRIENDS, was once questioned about her decision to return to TV shows during an interview with Variety (in 2019).
The Murder Mystery actress responded by saying that over the previous few years, she had noticed how much more TV was being produced, which made her quite envious of what it had to offer. To quote her:
“It wasn’t until the last couple of years when these streaming services were just sort of exploding with this amount of quality that I actually started to think, ‘Wow, that’s better than what I just did.’ And then you’re seeing what’s available out there and it’s just diminishing and diminishing in terms of, it’s big Marvel movies. Or things that I’m not just asked to do or really that interested in living in a green screen.”
Meanwhile, you can watch the six-episode series of Emilia Clarke’s Secret Invasion, which is currently airing on Disney+. The platform streams new episodes every Wednesday.
